It's a damn shame that the quality of Nadia was impacted severely by the Island/Africa arc. It wasn't even Gainax's fault, either. Throughout most of production the anime was supposed to be 26 episodes, but at the last minute the TV network forced them to extend it to 39 episodes. They were suddenly forced to come up with 13 random episodes that they hadn't planned for.

The first 22 episodes were directed by Anno, and are absolutely excellent. When the extra 13 episodes were ordered, Anno was suffering from intense burnout and overwork, so he decided to work on the ending rather than directing the filler. Therefore, episodes 23-34 were not directed by Anno, and are significantly worse than the rest of the show. Fortunately the last 5 episodes were directed by Anno and had the same quality as the first half of the show.

In an alternate universe, there's a version of Nadia that's remembered as an absolute classic, 26 episode anime. However, the failure of Nadia contributed to Anno falling into a 4 year long depression, which eventually led him to creating Evangelion. So Nadia failing was ultimately good in the long run, because without it, Evangelion may never have been created.

Still, there's a lot to love about Nadia. The parts directed by Anno are still greatly enjoyable, and a fine piece of early 90's anime. Also the opening theme is amazing and is now one of my favourite anime OP's.

Anno's first pro anime was Macross where this exact situation happened, the show did well and they ordered another cour when it was supposed to be 2.
Instead of doing what they did which was basically write an epilogue he decided to shit himself and run away while Shinji Higuchi cobbled together episodes so bad the Nips had to make up conspiracy theories about Korean sabotage to try to explain it.

Personally I think Anno already had a template to work off of, he could have just did what he damn well knew Macross did, and he really had no excuse to abscond.

The Island Arc literally has the most development for Jean and Nadia's romance in the entire anime.

I would argue it just retreads traits that were already established about them. They don't behave in truly 'new'ways on the island, in fact they become more simplistic and flanderized

Nadia in particular goes through a flurry of emotions during that arc:
>nega bitch digging in her heels
>worrying over and finally appreciating Jean
>trying to get close to him and becoming deredere
>tsun coming back
>shy, uncertain reflections
It's not even just her and Jean. She had that nighttime conversation with Grandis as well, which was a great moment for both characters.

>>
>>287722102
She regresses at the end of the arc, but it's still the only part of the series where she shows so much affection for Jean and realizes how important he is, other than the last five minutes of the final episode.
>>
>>287722097
What did she mean by this? I'm not a turbo carnivore or anything but there's nothing inhuman about eating meat. If anything we're really suboptimal biologically for a purely vegan diet.
>>
>>287722097
she was even bitching about flowers being grown on the ship. stupid brown brat needs correction
>>
I like this island arc pre granfis gang, it's only with that epsiode that it seriously takes a unimaginable nosedive in quality all around. When it's just the three of them on the island it's obvious not that high point of the series but still worth watching I'd say, it's fun. There's also pretty good stuff like the mushroom episode.
Grandis gang onward is pointless, obviously aside from the red Noah stuff.
>>
>>287722202
We already knew she appreciated his efforts but was too stubborn to open up. Island arc was just retreading as filler that where the kiss could have been save for the ending in the original 26 EP format.

There's an semi-official doujin (RetroRocket Girl, IIRC) with Sadamoto showing Nadia engaged in passing an enormous "veggie steamer", no doubt inspired by real life events.

>>287722872
Except Anno didn't have them kiss at the end. And then the douchebag released a director's cut that removes all the "filler," as you put it, and just keeps the sci-fi stuff from the Island Arc. It's pretty soulless, in my opinion.

I don't know if there's some kind of base that they both derive from, (well laputa, to an extent), and this is why, but I never see it mentioned how much Nadia and Full metal alchemist share in the backstory and stuff. The philosophers stone even have the same function as the blue water, storing the souls of the citizens of the ancient advanced city destroyed by the main antagonist of the series, which is then used at the end of the series by the father of the protagonists to solve stuff
I never h
I don't know if im missing some common ancestor but I've never seen it elsewhere and it seems very directly lifted, but the connection surprisingly just never mentioned anywhere

Those animals should feel honoured to become sustenance for a higher being such as myself.

Jokes aside, maybe that mentality makes more sense in buddhism and shintoism because people can reincarnate as animals in the former and animals, along with inanimate objects, possess souls in general in the latter.

But in the Africa Arc, even though it's played for laughs, we still see Nadia willing to throw everything she's built with Jean away for a pretty face. It kind of makes you hate her. Then to find out, a couple of episodes later, that she hates herself was sobering.
