Otoh it's an *established* story so the current form is made of many forms before, probably generations worth of iterations that no one can truly claim (reinterprete) it as its own.I don't know, maybe it's a little of both, but one is more dominant than the other.
>>287716339What kind of ruins this for me is that the manga will do all this for when Akane learns or fufills a new aspect in her performance only to have a more accomplished rakugo perform a story in a less bombastic fashion (presentation wise) and it's treated as better work. Just feels like a constant mismatch in presentation and dialogue. Comparing this to the supposed master of this story, Shiguma, and that doesn't even register as a more grand or successful performance comparatively yet the dialogue will tell us it is more masterful while the presentation does not convey as much to me at least. I guess the primary difference would be that Shiguma is technically bringing the audience into the world of the story, while here it's more like Akane's bringing characters out of the world to act the story.

There is no one God of Death to learn, his character has to be interpreted somehow. Shomei had his funny skeleton Death, Shiguma had his creepy cute cartoon grandpa Death, and Akane's version is strongly based on Shiguma's with the cuteness amped up.

>>287721892It just seems really hard to depict the intricacies of a spoken performance without any audio and the rubric of a masterful performance as it pertains to the manga is ever shifting. I like to see her progress but it's hard to even gauge where the endpoint even is until the manga feels ready to say she's reached it. We've seen numerous master rakugoka perform and it never feels like the presentations of their performances adhere to what's considered the next step in Akane's art. It's like a journeyman painter being told they have to master painting blue to reach an advanced level and then all the master painters we see never use the color blue.
