Looking back, why was the ending and sequel for this series so controversial?Was it truly godawful?

The ending wasn't controversial at all. The sequel isn't controversial either. We all agree it sucks, there is no controversy.

In general the story just had too many fallen plot points and sloppy character build up. The world didnt make sense and the alien shit at the last minute was stupid.

The ending is controversial because it's tone deaf corporate nonsense where Naruto and Sasuke, despite being the strongest people in the world, have to pretend they aren't gay. Sakura has a pretend marriage that an 11 year old can tell is an abject lie, and Naruto treats going home to his family as an obligation even while he's miserable at the hokage office. It's like Kishimoto was told what the pairings would be and he wrote how they would work with a gun to his head, which is dysfunctionally and without genuine chemistry. A decade later we are waiting for the real ending and sequel.

The ending was only "controversial" for shipperfags. For anyone that doesn't care about where characters stuck their peepee, it was just outright bad. But then again, so was the entire fucking manga past the end of the first arc.
