Why do some manga never become popular in the West while they are bestsellers in Japan?>Kochikame>Gintama>Kingdom
Kingdom is the single best selling manga in France at the moment.
>>287738530>kochikamevery long, episodic comedy, never aired on tv>gintamavery long, japanese references, character development>kingdomvery long, character development, more complex than your average mangaIf the manga is long is probably slow/episodic. If its slow is not going to be popular. The big three are very easy to read, quite basic and anyone can enjoy them. Also they are products of their time
>Kochikame"The West" includes more countries than the US, I watched it on TV as a kid all the time.>GintamaGintama is popular in the West. Aren't like half of the top 10 entries in MAL Gintama?>KingdomThe manga only got licensed in English relatively recently. It's well known in the rest of the West as the other anon pointed out.
>>287738843>malthe main reason they are highly rated is because only the fanbase rated them. ~100k users arent a lot in mal. also the fanbase is unfamous for being braindead (as every battle shonen fanbase)
>>287738530Because they're shit. Seriously anything that's only popular in Japan and not in the West is always shit. And anything that's popular in the West but not so much in Japan is usually great. Nips have dogshit taste.
>>287738884>100k users arent a lotsocial media has truly ruined people's perspective on popularity huh
>>287738887kaiji is not popular in the west.
>>287738530You need an anime to get popular in the west for people to read a manga. KochiKame is an old Japanese comedy that’s too long. Gintama is simply too Japanese, half jokes are based around cultural references or wordplay. Kingdom is too long, historical fiction, and the anime isn’t that great. S1 killed a lot of momentum in the west. Honestly the less western fans the better unless you want annoying blacks going on and on about muh aura. Anyway, western sales don’t matter, 90% of a series’ success is dependent on Japan
kingdom IS popular
>saying 'the west' when you just mean usa, which isn't isn't even a part of asia so isn't part of the eaat/west dichotomy
>>287740630No one is buying the Viz releasesSales numbers are low af
>>287740817when the box sets drop everyone will be reading kingdom. Around vol 20 is when it goes full throttle. The germans have also started releasing kingdom and volume 1 and 2 have been selling well
>>287738887this but vice versa.
>>287738530cause burgers are casuals that don't touch manga unless it has a popular anime adaptation available.
