Re-reading ch1, I think part of why the series struggled at first is how many people take things at face value. They see an edgy boy swinging around his nuke sword, being told his dad is a hero and all these actions are justified. When it is quite clear now how in over his head Chihiro was and how poor a grasp he had on pretty much everything.It is certainly more rough than the manga is now, and the risk of a more slow pacing which feels like the opening to a movie almost didn't pay off. But I'm sure a lot just shrugged and went oh I guess he'll just get magic swords till he is the kagurabachist.

It’s a battle shonen so we get these big fight arcs, but the best material is SoL (Bitchy sister chapters, recent one with lap sleeping). But those are spread out between 20 chapters big arc that we’re just okayish so far. I do however think that it has potential, but it heavily depends on the adaptation quality. It it’s genuinely really high quality to the point of enhancing source material (see frieren, manga is meh, but anime makes it better), it’ll be a hit
