Denji represented the crazy, fun side of CSM while Aki was the more emotional, human side of it. After he died, there was the expectation that Denji would grow as a character and fill that hole, but he only got worse and worse. Asa could also have been that replacement, but she doesn't get to do anything. Why should I care about the world ending when the main character is more concerned with trying to score while it's happening? Denji doesn't care. Aki would care, but he's dead. Kishibe would care, but he's missing. Yoshida and Shiga care, but I barely know anything about them. Asa cares, but she's irrelevant. If the characters don't care about what's happening in the story, why should the reader? The Gun Devil plot in Part 1 wouldn't have worked nearly as well if Aki didn't exist because Denji has no reason to care about him beyond being rewarded by Makima for defeating him. Denji having small and trivial goals worked because there were other characters who actually cared about the state of the world the story was set in. A guy trying to get laid isn't the premise for a 200+ chapters story.
For a change of pace, what's your favorite outro?I'm quite partial to episode 5's, the music helps set the tone for the panic of the eternity devil arc, and the trippy symbolism is neat, especially the foreshadowing for the gun devil.

What's sad is that there are no consequence for everything that happened in the story. In a way I can see that Fujimoto has this ending planned for a long time, it's well rooted in the themes, but what doesn't work is the way characters are written to not develop, and instead just react to their situation. I sometimes said these characters are only as entertaining as the scene Fujimoto's puts them in, meanwhile Asa was fun to read while being lost and finding her place in the story. Sadly Fujimoto got bored of her and ruined the story.
