>>287792901Funnily, the series that started the urban fantasy chuuni boom of the 00s was Boogiepop, which was VERY heavily channeling darker 80s vibes. In the 90s, D&D style fantasy series kind of took over as the main thing. Boogiepop was kind of a modernization of the edgy types of stories that were popular in the 80s. It just swapped "near-future sci-fi" for "urban fantasy" (but it's still got remnants of that, like the evil technology cult).I'm actually surprised there hasn't been a big trend-swinger in a while. We've been stuck on "isekai fantasy" for like 15 years now. Maybe the Narou pipeline is TOO effective for its own good...

It came out right as Akihabara culture was emerging in Japan and basically did for light novels what Evangelion did for anime. Dengeki Bunko was a MAJOR industry driver throughout the 00s entirely because Boogiepop elevated them so damn much, and every other bunko magazine suddenly had to step up their game to compete with them. It actually did what westerners think Haruhi did.
