There are layers here.
Umi's persona is defined in her relationship with the hottest girl is school.
One could read her interest in Maki as Umi seeking to assert her independence from Yuu and the suffocating social expectation of being in her clique.
Yuu chasing her down might be her panicking that one of her charges got off her leash and she's trying to drag Umi (and Maki) back to her side.

Sure that sounds bad when you put it that way but it seems to me the way Umi feels about Yuu is pretty similar to the way Yuu feels about Umi. She seems to be trying hard to stand by Umi´s side because Umi is special to her. We are a 100% guaranteed to get a Yuu flashback at some point showing us why Yuu idealizes Umi and is trying her best to not be left behind herself.

As for Maki... Umi is right about him, he compromises easily. But consider the following, he probably knew Umi was sort of using him all along but he most likely figured that even if that´s the case, loneliness is just worse. Still, it would seem he is not that terrible a person that any interaction with others would do. After all, given the choice he´s always put his plans with Umi first so i guess it has to be her.
