The sun has set and it's time to look for some older things to brighten our path.

When they started giving crinn clothes the plot to dugram started to get worse. It's a fun show but i think the feddie side wasn't engaging enough. I found I didn't really care about who won or the politics other than crinn and his team not dying. The first 35 episodes were really good that i wish it kept the same level of intrigue throughout the whole run. It would have been fantastic if so. It almost felt like they lost a writer to a different team. It's in a weird spot though you compare it to LOTGH and GNDM where there is not really an engaging enough villain but the politics aren't intriguing like in LOTGH either. I don't think it's terrible or bad though and i'm glad i watched it. It just had a missed opportunity with the 'villain'

The 2003 dvd of 綿の国星 has both the pilot test episode and every single scan of the setting materials. Holy shit? I didn't know the pilot was on the dvd.

Uncivilized Books has also stated they'll license fire in to english. Very ironic timing because I just bought the numbered signed hardcover 70s edition. I think now would be a good time to buy the older copies of [jp] manga you might want from Hideko Mizuno because while i know there is at least a PTBR edition i think mizuno works aren't TL'd in to english for a wider audience despite her japanese popularity.

superbook and flying house best retro anime

>retro

Nonsense word that shouldn't be used.
>>
>>287799329
The translation was fucking God awful unfortunately
Usually I don't point this out because no one really gains from knowing that and ignorance is better but in this case the subs are actually pretty fucking ass
I got to ep 20 and then skinned alternate episodes til the end it was very promising for the first dozen eps
>>
>>287800782
A lot of subs for older series are ass. I don't think it applies to dugram only as it's clear a lot of people didn't really understand enough of what they were TLing, but it's just a part of history and fantl really.

>>287800306
>translators note: retro is a latin word meaning 'backwards' or 'behind' that is commonly used as slang to mean 'of, resembling, or pertaining to The Past'

Is there an OVA you wish they rereleased on dvd/bd because it's only on LD/VHS?

anything old enough that you can tell it's old just by experiencing it, usually due to being made with technology and techniques that are now considered obsolete or old-fashioned

I've come to the conclusion that I don't just think retro anime is better than modern anime, it's just better

And I'll argue my case

First the nostalgia argument
I was born in '97. This era was already over by the time I got into anime, the first anime I watched was Deathnote. I have no nostalgia for it.
Furthermore, I haven't even watched many of the examples I'm going to post.

Also to clarify, I'm arguing solely from an art point of view here, not writing or audio. Just the art is objectively better.

But another part of the nostalgia argument is the grainy look. That it is this soft compressed crunchy look of a VHS tape that makes old anime look the way it is, that's softer on the eyes or something.
Pic related has no imperfections. It is clean, and it not only looks retro, but it looks good
>>
>>287803905
this >>287803923. the thread is pretty shit with the "is x retro?? lol??" but the last thing it needs is people arguing. just post what you enjoyed instead of trying to bait (you)s. I would automatically assume anyone who watches older things has more maturity than the average poster so they don't have to reply to themselves.

The only imperfection here is the decay of the black lines of the cel, but this was never present during production, it's just an old cel. It's not what people talk about when they say "old anime looks better because it's not digital HD"

What really makes old anime look good is the artistic merit of it. The lines and the colours.
Look at the colours here. They are good, they change with the lighting and the choices of them are beautiful. You don't need a deep analysis of it, you just need to look at it. Modern anime has terrible plastic look hair and skin

>>287804005
I don't mean argue in the sense of having a heated argument with someone. I'm just sharing why I think reto anime looks good, cool your tits.

While the new Ranma is definitely going for a more vibrant cartoony style than the old one, one cannot ignore that the old Ranma was doing the exact same thing, it's a very wacky series.
But look at this comparison. Every part of the old one is just more skillfully done. The tufts of the hair, the draping of the fabric, the shapes of the eyes and face.
The old one just feels more tactile, it feels real. Real hair, real skin, real clothes. Even the background is better drawn, the wood feels like wood, the plaster feels like plaster.

It's not better because it's old, it's just better because it's drawn more skillfully

Older anime had a grip on reality.
When they designed their scenes, they bent and twisted the model sheets to fit each scene.
A sunset scene doesn't just add a colour filter to the characters, they totally redraw them custom fit for a sunset

If you dig hard enough you can find equally HD shots of the backgrounds you can see that those too, even though they were traditionally painted, were painted with pretty flat paints and brushes. It's not the medium that lends them their appealing look, it's entirely down to the skill of the artist
>>
>>287804177
And I won't post it here but I've done studies of the colours used in old anime, both the cels and the backgrounds, and it's clear that there is no limitation of colour. Which is another argument often made, that the colours of retro anime are better because they were more limited. They were not limited. They had access to just as wide a palette as today, and their set of standard go-to colours was equally unlimited.
It was pure skill that led them to the colours they chose.
