new episode today. What did we think?
New episode of highbrow yuri? Nice.
>>287807503>Awajima>yuriDon't get me wrong, it's kino but it's definitely not yuri. Class S at best
>>287807616Not even that much of a Class S when like most of it isn't even in the girls only school.
>>287807616it's too highbrow for you to detect
Very cute episode today
very meh episode today
>>287807616What's with people with 0 yuridar here
It's been 4 episodes and I still have no idea what do they do at that school
>>287808755It's based on the real life Takarazuka Music School>>287807616You have a narrow definition of yuri, Class S is yuri
>>287809027Nta but>and then we grow up and realized it was a phase and fucked dudesisn't yuri
>>287809027I find it amusing that nobody knows anything about Takarazuka Revue or Takarazuka music school, on a website with at least two boards dedicated to Japanese media and culture.
>>287809077that's not a all what happened
>>287809139>if you post on 4ch you must know everything about random obscure jap shit
>>287809077Whether or not the relationship lasts forever shouldn't be a factor when calling something yuri
>>287809355Usually? Sure. In the case of this show where the yuri relationships are already dead in the same episode that they are introduced? It's not really yuri.
>>287809168But that's my point. It's NOT obscure in Japan. And it's influenced many major anime titles.Princess Knight,Rose of Versailles,Utena, more recently there was Kageki Shoujo, and Shoujo Kageki Starlight RevueThese are just the ones where the influence is basically worn on its sleeve.
>>287809484>It's NOT obscure in JapanAre we in Japan?
>>287809535Why don't you just go to MAL where everyone has the same attitude of proud ignorance? If people like you were all the community had then a lot of titles which are now popular in the English sphere wouldn't have been fan-translated in the first place.
>>287809168Takarazuka is one of the cornerstones of women's art in Japan, it ain't obsure at all
Dude hit the jackpot! Oh wait it was all a dream!
Damn
>>287809648He still found a fellow himedanshi to bond with over their shared hobby. That's a bigger prize than most actual lottery players and most anons ever win.
>>287809714cute future wife
Whatever episode. The first story had potential, but it felt more like an outline than an actualy story of two people. On a side note, it's a bit sad to hear Nabatame voicing an old lady (Wakana's mom).
>>287810169I liked it.The first story was a tragedy about broken dreams, born out of mismatched expectations and bad communication. The second was a story of one broken dream and one dream that was almost broken, both mended by one cool aunt who communicated indirectly. That was contrasted with the earlier story of Wakaba's friend who ruined her dream but inspired her to keep pursuing hers despite that, and Wakaba's revelation that she unknowingly took that friend's place, which prompted her to wonder if she could possibly live up to such loaded expectations. And the third was about two lonely fans, one chance encounter that fizzled out due to mismatched expectations and bad communication, and a second encounter that allowed those fans on the sidelines to connect over the dream-that-causes-tragedies the other characters bond over.Any story that can cover that much ground and make me care about the characters in what little screentime they get is good in my book. That lateral-thinking editing style is a big part of the show's magic, IMO.
>>287810634>Any story that can cover that much ground and make me care about the charactersSee, I have no problem with the first part, but the second part is my problem. Outside of last episode characters, I don't really care about any of these characters. The characters drama is well written on vacuum, but this anime is the equivalent of looking up only the "plot" scenes from a slice of life anime youtube,
>>287810746Blessed Zoetropeanon.
>>287810761>Outside of last episode characters, I don't really care about any of these characters.I do. I'd never heard of them 25 minutes before, but now I want to hug all of them. It takes real skill to pull that off with ~5 minutes of screentime per character.
I will be honest, gun to my head, I couldn't name a single character in this show.
>>287810864That's what the eyecatches are for.
>>287809139I mean if you asked me to name a single Manzai duo I wouldn't be able to do it. And it's not like I even knew the name Takarazuka off the top of my head, I just knew a school like this was real and googled it
I don't know what Class S is.
>>287812247Class S is Showa era slang for "Don't ask, don't tell".
>>287812247Class S culture was a way for girls who attended all-girls schools in the early 1900s to practice the courtship and rituals involved in being in a romantic relationship.
>>287812496It was actually encouraged by the Japanese government at the time. Even though Class S can be seen as a precursor to yuri, it actually wasn't considered progressive at all, since it allowed the girls to stay "pure" as students before going on to start their own families.
>>287813192That's basically what "Don't ask, don't tell" amounted to, with the same consequences (frustrated kids who got married later but raised their kids to accept their same sex crushes as legitimate to avoid repeating their parents' trauma; a government that still doesn't understand why this happened; old people who blame some kind of external conspiracy instead of the government they elected).
Cool shot.
>>287813330You're viewing Class S culture through a modern lens that simply didn't exist at the time. Sexual identity wasn't a factor in Class S relationships. Were some girls who practiced it lesbians? It's possible, but they certainly weren't the majority.
>>287809708Male friendship can be more rewarding than a girlfriend. That's what they say bros before hoes
Wife material?
>>287813662>>287809714Damn, she's pretty. Takako Shimura found success on josei but she could make waifus for a living. Too bad she isn't interested
>>287810169>it's a bit sad to hear Nabatame voicing an old lady (Wakana's mom). You mean Hitomi Nabatame? Her voice is pure sex. Anyway, I thought she retired after marriage.
Bro...
>>287813635>You're viewing Class S culture through a modern lens that simply didn't exist at the time.Maybe my provocative phrasing for the sake of sparking discussion is coming back to bite me here, but that wasn't really what I meant to argue.Sexual identities as we know them today may not have been articulated in those terms back then, but the angsty yearning, deep emotional bonds and tendency to romanticize tragedy that characterize Class S either had an unspoken sexual component, produced sexual feelings in the process, or both, regardless of how anyone involved framed sexuality at the time.DADT was pushed at a time when sexual identities had become articulated closer to the way we know them today, but the similarities with Class S are that some people who lived through both cultures grew up with lingering frustrations because of restrictions imposed by their circumstances, raised their kids with values that aimed to avoid repeating their own traumatizing experiences, and at least some of their kids acted on those new values, which was the opposite of what the establishment at the time intended. And that's why everyone is gay.
>>287811145Takarazuka is very very Western in everything it does. I don't know if it's right to compare it to Manzai.
>>287813987He's one step away from posting on /a/.What do you say to save him?
>>287814177I don't agree, but rather than repeat points from my source, I'll just tell you my source, which is a book/paper called "Passionate Friendship: The Aesthetics of Girl’s Culture in Japan" which you should look into if you're interested in this subject. I'll catbox the pdf if you want
>>287814969Cool, that actually sounds interesting.>I'll catbox the pdf if you wantPlease do.
>>287815030https://litter.catbox.moe/4hqmosr6uf8gnmms.pdfRegular catbox is having issues so I had to use the temporary version instead, this link will be up for three days I think. The section that has to do with what we were talking about starts on page 33
>>287815259Thanks. It's a bit slow to load on my end, but I'll check it out.
Don't die yet I haven't watched the episode yet
>>287812247In short, they test the benefits of a mutual relationship, without the risk of pregnancy.
>>287806868After the last episode about generational trauma caused by messy parenting it was refreshing to see wholesome supportive families. Hug your kids/parents/family/pets/dakis/fumos, anons. Also really nice to see Takuto and Sayaka being comfortable with "girly" hobbies/interests, mostly because western discussion of guys being into that stuff is handled differently. Also I had to pause and rewind the episode here. Didn't expect to see a married couple sleeping in separate beds
>>287817358>Didn't expect to see a married couple sleeping in separate bedsI've heard it's not too uncommon in Japan
>>287817556It's not uncommon everywhere once they hit a certain age.
Swapping the name order makes this more confusing than it needs to be, also they typo'd Mihoto (twice)
Something about the character design in this show really does it for me
But Wakana was way cuter before she cut her hair
Apparently this is a real Austrian musical but I doubt the original was anywhere near as visual kei-looking as this
>>287818057>Death, the personification of the abstract concept of "Death" or the "Grim Reaper". His appearance is modeled on the poet Heinrich Heine who was fascinated by Elisabeth, and the rock singer David Bowie.Actually I guess maybe it wasn't that far off
I wish I had male friends :(
Dang, someone just casually gave granny two front row tickets worth 5500 yen each
>>287818032I disagree. In fact everyone in this picture should get a haircut.
I love watching Kujima and Awajima on Thursday nights
>dead threadEpisode hit a bit too close to home for some of you I see
>>287818057>>287818082It's one of the Takarazuka Revue's most famous works, and in every major iteration has been extremely visual kei. Notable for not deviating much from the original story, yet being evocative in its musical numbers, costumes, casting and basically every other way. One of the performances that cemented them as a world-class theater full of androgynous ambiguous and talented women
>>287818156Same.It's melancholic.
Seeing this work, Aoi Hana author really started to disilike the yuri genre in her future works.
>>287819091Interesting, is there anywhere to watch these?
>>287818922You're referring to the having no friends bit I assume.
>>287820384Wonder how spicy the bottom third characters will be.
>>287813662I can sense the pure gyaru vibe from here. So yes.
>>287819215Yeah, it’s got that quiet “end of the week and nothing’s really changed” kind of vibe. Just two dorks hanging out, soft lighting, understated OST, and then you’re suddenly staring at the ceiling at 2am thinking about your own life. It’s comfy, but the kind of comfy that makes you aware of the empty chair next to you. That’s probably why it hits.
>>287821752Cute lesbian.
>>287822272cute jks
>>287819245>started to disilike the yuri genre This is not the first time that somewhat said this same sentiment regards to her, and i don't know where this narrative comes from, Some people even calling her a Class-S author.
Man, I'm really loving this so far. This episode was a lot more light hearted but it was just as enjoyable as the last. If it carries on like this it might be my AOTY.
>>287824010I can't imagine a person watching this episode and thinking "yep, this is AOTY".
>>287818922There's absolutely nothing wrong with being a single 30-something man who obsesses about an all-girls opera school in his spare time, I'll have you know.
>>287820970Well put
>>287824202Well, if it was this episode alone, it obviously wouldn't. It's more like "this episode hasn't spoiled it so far."
Morbidly funny the way he was just chilling on his bed and then all the sudden
>>287824202It is exactly what I was hoping for from this show. Little vignettes of life, connections and loss from people who have been influenced by Awajima. It doesn't have the grand narrative of episodes 2 & 3, but loose ends like this are still threads that help tie together the whole shape of it
>>287824202It's easily in the top three of the season for me, so it could end up as my AOTS
>>287818922I havent watched it yet
>>287824979Please inform us when you do.
