I think what depresses me is that romance is such an integral and intimate part of establishing relationships that a lot of characters don't even feel human without it. It's like everyone is some sexless robot. A good romance does more than just ship two characters it really can develop them in more interesting and mature ways. It's certainly not the only way to do such a thing. It's not mandatory. But it is something. And without having something every character relationship feels the same, sterile and rote.
