It spent too much time telling us that rakugo is cool instead of showing us how it is cool, because when it needs to do that, it is busy regurgitating expository dialogue over the performances. I still don't know why these stories that they tell are supposed to be good in the first place, but also why this medium is the best way to tell them. Is the performances the main appeal, if so, why ruin them by talking over them? The fact that it has such a weak cast of characters doesn't help either. They don't seem to have a life outside of their obsession with rakugo, and in turn they don't feel like three dimensional individuals. I was expecting a series kinda like Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na! but about rakugo, a series that did the whole "this is why I love this medium, what made the medium truly special, and what can only be achieved in it" far, far better, while also riding on a cast of charming characters and superb execution.

However I didn’t get the take away that the show wants to be show of why rakugo is amazing from a technical standpoint as much as using rakugo to serve its own story. The best way to explain it would be Slam dunk verses Kuroko no basket both really like basketball but one cares a lot more for a technical standpoint about the show.
