Laurel is genuinely the biggest nothing burger of an Uma Musume lead I've ever seen. I thought Kitasan was the worst MC by a long shot, but color me surprised, I was wrong. Every other protagonist has something going for them, while Laurel has nothing but "I must get stronger" monologues and constant Brian-wanking.

It was popular precisely because nobody expected it to be as good as it was. Its quality was what helped put Uma Musume on the mainstream map. You go look up the archives or go look up older posts on places like Reddit and it's all pretty much the same trajectory that begins with skepticism and then astonishment and acceptance that it's good. Everyone basically settled on it being kino the moment Suzuka got her sudden injury. That was when people realized this wasn't just a generic kemonomimi anime.

Tamamo was great but she was removed from the plot way too early for obvious reasons. Brian might be cool later on, I don't even think she knows Laurel exists. The rest of them are way too friendly and likable for my taste.
