Maybe if a character is, say, a country bumpkin, you can convey it with a dialect that's associated with country bumpkins, and it's really a case by case method. The most noticeable feature is replacing だ with や, so any translation effort should start from replacing "is" with "ich".

I personally render Tokyo more like London though and tend to use something more Manchester or otherwise up north for Osaka. Kyoto I tend to render even more up north, especially the archaic, more elegant varieties that are sometimes used in fiction I tend to more so render as elegant archaic Scottish. >>287867089You can honestly also get away with using say something more similar to Boston for Osaka and something more similar to “southern belle” type old-fashioned southern U.S.A. speech for Kyoto, like the “what in tarnation” and “I do declare.” kind of persons but kind of regal. Kyoto also sort of comes across like that, especially the more archaic variety that's typically used in fiction which isn't even used much in Kyoto any more. For whatever reason in fiction if for Osaka dialect they just tend to use a relatively modern rendition but for Kyoto everyone talks like a geisya from 200 years ago.It wouldn't be entirely wrong to base eastern dialects on England and western dialects on North America, though honestly reversing it in many ways probably makes more sense but the real issue is that that that makes rough Tokyo Japanese very hard to protray. The U.S.A. doesn't really have a clear “capital” in the social sense with its own slang and dialect and England does. There is “standard Japanese” which is mostly based on Tokyo Japanese but still not how people in Tokyo talk with each other outside of a formal context, and there's actual “Tokyo Japanese” which is what tends to be used in fiction. Which is just a big cultural difference between Japanese fiction and English fiction, English fiction far less often tends to use more “real” language and in English the distance between the formal written language and how many people speak is also less removed. There are many native speakers of English who just speak like people do on the news and that barely ever happens in Japanese.

Also, I'm sure a West Country accent is closer to Early Modern English than nearly every North American accent. I reckon only accents from the Maritimes are as close.
