Does /a/ like Genshiken?
I just finished it and it made me feel pretty melancholic reminiscing over a time in my life that's over now. Maybe I'm just being gay but it hit surprisingly hard, i think the character development in particular was done really well.

First series was good
Don't bother with the sequel

Agreed, season 1 was the best but i feel like the second part enhanced how good the first part was. For me at least it made me appreciate it even more.

>>287865214
I'm kinda itching to do so, is it different from the anime?
>>
>>287867050
I heard Madarame is having gay sex with a trap while his wife is giving birth to their child or something.

Hating Nidaime is brainlet behavior. Just read it in full. Nidaime is not as good, but still a fine read. Do NOT read Spotted Flower though.
Sue a best.
>>
>>287864920
I really enjoyed it. It made me melancholic too, not over my past but the end of that era and the fact that I couldn't enjoy my otaku hobbies in the same way as the Elevens of the time.

The harem arc sucks
>>
>>287867344
Nobody cares about something that isn't even real. We're talking about Nidame. People hate on Nidame a bit too much
>>
>>287868162
Nidaime just feels too different, or meant for a different audience. The first series was mostly generic otaku sensibilities, with some exaggerations but mostly grounded. The Nidaime hyper-focused on a fujoshi cast, with the trap and all, and even did wacky shit like create a whole harem for Madarame.
>>
>>287867775
No, it deserves all the hate.
>>
>>287868162
>>287868703

I didn't mind Nidaime too much but if the order of the seasons were reversed i would probably have stopped watching. Nidaime is fine but it's carried heavily by the previous season/cast.
It made me appreciate the original cast even more and it emphasized how great they were. The fact that most of the season 1 cast are absent for Nidaime added to the feeling of time having passed and people changing and moving on. I guess it's a case of needing something bad to appreciate something good even more or something like that. (even though i didn't think it was too bad)
>>
>>287868703
>fujoshi cast
this isn't the bad part
>trap
this is whatever
>madarame plot
this is the core problem of nidaime and why it feels inferior
>>
>>287864920
Lost interest when enough of the cast got cycled out to the point of the club just being composed entirely of Fujoshi.
>>
>>287869154
The new cast was boring as hell.
>>
Nidaime could've been fine if it had been allowed to stand on its own instead of whoring out Madarame, the fan favorite character. The fujo cast had potential to be interesting characters but they got completely neglected in favor of Madarame's dumb harem hijinks taking over the whole manga, and half of that was the fucking faggot trap and his gayass insecurities while the other half was Madarame's own indecisiveness dragging everything out. It all just compounded the disappointment that this was supposed to be a sequel to a manga that was known and beloved for being true to the otaku experience. The stuff that everyone loved in the original just went out the window in Nidaime.

That said, Spotted Flower was infinitely worse, basically the equivalent of Kemono Friends S2, and once you know it exists you can no longer pretend that it doesn't.
>>
>>287864920
Man, that episode where Madarame was trying to tell Saki about a hair sticking out of her nose was so damn good. That ending still gives me feels.
>>
>>287864920
I love Oono from S1, but she gets so annoying in S2.

>>
I dunno, I used to read it but the sequel kinda makes it hard to look back on it pleasantly now.
>>
Could a show as good as Genshiken be made about the current otaku culture? Or can it only be ADHD-ridden trip like Kaguya-hime?
>>
>>287864920
First season is good though has some annoying faggotry in it, second season is meh but has some moments, though plenty of annoying faggotry.

The girl focused one with the trap SUUUUUUUUUUUCKS.
>>

I actually watched it pretty recently and I enjoyed it. Most of my enjoyment probably derived from the early 2000s setting desu.
>>
>>287870187
What even is otaku culture like in 2026? Do nerds still exist at that level? Anime and manga in general feel so mainstream today, i doubt people are ostracized for liking it anymore.

>>287870970
Same, the time period was very nostalgic to me. That early internet era was magical.
>>
>>287864920
It's very good until it's not. Once they change out the cast run and don't look back.
>>
>>287871814
>What even is otaku culture like in 2026?

With how mainstream "nerd" shit has become I imagine I would only feel frustrated watching "normies' act like they're geeks these days. I see people at work openly discussing it without shame. I see people call themselves nerds and geeks for having the most surface level takes and interest in the hobby. I had to sit there and listen to one them go on about nerdy they were for watching MCU movies and I just wanted to leap across the table and beat them with a stapler. The problem with nerd culture now is that it became corporate culture. Everyone's just riding the wave of what's popular because it's popular.

From what I can tell, vtumors and gacha.

>i doubt people are ostracized for liking it anymore.
If we're talking about mainstream shonen stuff like AoT, NAruto, JJK, Demon Slayer etc etc. then no, people aren't. But other than that at best people will have no idea what you're talking about or at worst will think you're a pedophile depending on the show.

Genshiken is a certified /a/ classic.
>>
>>287872609
It gets really frustrating when someone will try to talk your ear off about some popular crap but then you say ANYTHING about ANYTHING not trending and they look at you like you got three heads. I swear it's like they think the medium didn't exist before they got into it.

It was great. The mostly grounded and detailed approach to showing the club enjoying their hobbies was very fun. Part 2 is when it starts shitting the bed when the balance gets shifted too much to relationship drama and harem hijinks. I have to wonder if this is due in part to the author "aging out" of the culture (which Madarame ponders about himself when he's a working stiff in part 2). It feels like there was an opportunity to explore the changing times with the new club but you never get the same sense of immersion like you did in part 1 especially once the Madarame relationship drama becomes more of the focus.

It's a portal to what the early anime/manga fan community looked back in the day.
It's melancholic looking back, it used to be so simple.

>modern otaku culture
That mostly boils down to
>watching only the biggest shounen shows
>in english dub no less
>watching vtubers and their reactions for shows and games instead of experiencing it for themselves

>>287870970
Same, I love the 2000s setting. Also the Ono and Tanaka(I think that's the bf's name) makeout scene is hot.
>>
>>287870970
The 2000s were the last hurrah of otaku culture. It's no coincidence that visual novels were at their prime.

I enjoyed it and enjoyed watching Kujibiki Unbalance, pretty cool they made a full anime from the anime referenced in Genshiken
>>
>>287868966
>The fact that most of the season 1 cast are absent for Nidaime added to the feeling of time having passed and people changing and moving on
This was very relatable to me, the anime club I joined had a similar thing happen to it, I joined and found a bunch of old school newsgrounds type guys who were really into the old and obscure shit, real high power level guys, but they graduated and got slowly replaced with a bunch of normalfags and fujos who all enjoyed talking about dubs and naruto and shit. It was a fun environment for others, but it just wasn't for me anymore
>>
>>287865214
I'm going to read it
>>
>>287864920
Very comfy slice of life anime about otaku culture at the time. Arguably the best representation of it too.
>>
>>287869286
But that can be traced back to Nidaime's focus on the Madarame plot too. The new characters could've been interesting if they had gotten more screentime to interact with each other and their hobbies. Instead it circled around Madarame without going anywhere.
>>
>>287864920
Its good fun, shame nidame was so bad when it should have just been genshiken with more women
>>
>>287864920
The original series was pretty good, both the anime and the manga. Niidaime isn't that bad, but didn't really grab my attention.
>>
>>287882276
The full anime was shit, the OVA was the real Kujibiki Unbalance.
>>
>>287884895
I hated the trap so much even though I tend to like traps.
>>
>>287864920
The first manga series was a really good representation of what was it like to be an actual japanese otaku in the mid 2000s and the characters were solid as well. Nidaime is ehh, kinda fine, but lost a lot of the good points that made the first series great.

Ogiue best girl.
>>287867050
The anime is pretty good, but the manga is much better (the anime leaves a few character arcs abruptly unfinished). That anon is likely referring to the sequel which isn't very good.
>>
>>287864920
I love it. One of my favorites. I've rewatched it probably 3 times over the years.
I think the sequel is worth watching (and reading): it has a trap character and feels a bit less grounded in reality, but there is also a big focus on Madarame and it captures the feeling of growing old while younger people enter and take over the spaces you used to cherish (this is not portrayed as a wholly bad thing, just something Madarame and all of us have to deal with when growing old and growing apart from our friends and hobbies). I would say that the sequel is good.

>only japs count as otaku
Are you by chance fucking retarded? Even the Japs themselves consider foreigners who watch anime etc as otaku, and call them as such too. You don't need to be born to the right lineage to watch anime and read manga.
>>
>>287891896

Japan is no different, it's just more gachashit.
