Not just romantic chemistry, I'm not wearing shipping goggles here, I mean they showed clear signs of being a good match for each other as friends and as a team and quickly grew comfortable with each other and did a good job of taking care of each other. It isn't necessary that a relationship like that turn romantic. But it had the potential to be, eventually, if they had both decided they wanted it, and if it had then it would have been very good for them. Contrast that with Ichigo's relationship with Orihime, which has very little going for it outside the handful of special romantic moments that are supposed to make it feel right. That one does not feel right to me, because love isn't in the big moments, it's in living. Rukia just makes that gap feel more obvious, the problem was there even without her presence.

Didn't help that next arc (Arrancar), while it had nice fights, was copy-paste of SS one - just damsel in distress was different.Shame whole manga fell off (at least for me) in TYW. It felt so rushed and fights were there just to show Bankais of other captains. I’m still mad about this too, anon. Orihime was just a boring ditz Ichigo grew up with, whereas Rukia was the entire reason the series began in the first place, and the only girl who had a real connection to Ichigo. The best arc in the series by a longshot was all about Ichigo risking his life to save Rukia even though he had only known her/been a soul reaper for a short amount of time. He didn’t have to do that. He WANTED to, because he LOVED her. They had so many cute moments and a shitload of chemistry from the very first episode, so seeing both of them end up marrying their childhood friends feels like a slap in the face. Ichiruki was my first OTP, and is STILL my number 1.
