I think it's interesting how Sloth is used as a narrative device in the early arcs. Petelgeuse's obsession with love and conscious diligence seem to refer directly to the Divine Comedy, where the idea that sloth represents a lack of love originates, and sinners in purgatory's sloth layer run unceasingly to overcome it. In the flashback, Petelgeuse outright states that he's a sinner in search of redemption. He's trying to conquer Acedia through continous good deeds, and finds his love in Fortuna before it all goes tits up. I'm pretty sure that love is ultimately what ends up breaking him, as the Witch factor's rejection ironically proves that he, despite his own belief, was already free from sin. His journey mirrors Subaru's reckoning with his own sloth, which is broken by Fortuna's niece, Emilia through his love for her. It took me a while to realize how similar they are.
