I have been reading picrel. The Frieren show is clearly superior to the comic. In the books the jokes do not land, fight scenes are simplistic and the art itself, while pretty and polished, is also kind of bland and boring. Story is equally mid in both>inb4 spamSorry if there was a Frieren thread already, I ctrl-effed the catalog but couldnt find any
>>287892056No the manga is way better
>>287892056yes. There was some special sparkle in season one but the reality is that frieren is mid
>>287892056The manga gets progressively better. You can just jump to the chapter 81, which is where the third season will basically start from, and skip most of the previous rough parts.
>>287894045That is what I did though. I got started with the El Dorado arc after the last episode of the second season was released. It is decent, I suppose, though the time travel arc that follows is embarassingly bad and left a very bad taste in my mouth. Seeing the writer resorting to such cheap tropes makes me worried about the future of the series. Anyway, a couple days ago I decided to check out the rest of the books as well, starting with the first one. I struggle to think of a single instance where the anime does not improve upon the source. Maybe the translation is not that great and that is why dialogue feels so awkward? I am reading the official release though so I dunno
>>287892056I am rarely impressed by the Frieren manga, I agree. I mostly just keep up with it to avoid spoilers, but the anime is absolutely the real experience. I think the biggest issue is for being a fantasy manga, the world is so fucking dull aesthetically. As well, there's almost no set-dressing. When you see a bridge somewhere, there's never a road or something else around it. A monastary on a cliff just sits there without anything else nearby to make it feel real. Castles and towns lack any kind of whimsy or grandeur. All the interest in making interesting designs must be funneled into the clothing or something. At least that usually looks good.

>>287895119>clothedIt is supposedly drawn by a woman
>>287892056it's not even funny how sloppy the manga often is

Frieren started as a quick and dirty weekly manga, so it inevitably shows in the art quality.
it's been half a year

>>287895119>the world is so fucking dull aestheticallyIt is basically another "totally not Dragon Quest" setting, which uneducated retards on /a/ call "native isekai". Realistic and fantastic elements are scattered across the landscape without any particular rhyme or reason, because it is just a JRPG for kids at the core. Which would be fine, if the world did not attempt to sell itself as mature and serious. But because it does, bog-standard European castles in the country where the main enemy naturally learns flight magic, or unwalled villages in a monster-infested hellhole, or even bridges to nowhere, look dumb as fuck. And raise suspicion that the artist can't into actual design.
>>287894045Eh, I wouldn't say progressively. Quality goes up and down regularly. I lost interest somewhere in the middle and have no interest in returning.>>287895119100% agree with this. Also, so many panels looks like they just used a manga filter over a screenshot from a shitty JRPG. Especially every time they're in a small village.
>>287892056Dude, what if the mangakas read this? Don't be so mean to them, like, they put so much work into Frieren for everyone and you're just...
>>287904547I speculate they got scared shitless by the success of the show and have no idea where to take the story next. "Beyond journeys end" may sound cool and meta and whatever but is basically just a meme and if the time travel arc is any indication of their intentions then I can already tell this is going to turn from mid to shit very quickly>>287898680>reused assetsThis. Thought I was imagining things at first lol

"Beyond journeys end" may sound cool and meta and whatever but is basically just a meme and if the time travel arc is any indication of their intentions then I can already tell this is going to turn from mid to shit very quicklyI think the initial plan was to go for a slow-burn variation of le ebin subversion that was supposed to turn the original perception of the world on its head. But it so happened that the audience liked Frieren for being a simplistic story played absolutely straight. Also, even within that constect, the writer dropped the ball on the themes. Frieren's original party are far more interesting, and the new generation are shitty copycats. So the attention is constantly focuses on the former. The Goddess Monument arc is indicative of decay not because it is time travel bullshit, but because it symbolizes Frieren as a character and as a story living in the past and refusing to let the dead be buried, to the point it pushes the present out of focus.
