I think a lot of it had to do with the Black Lion taking part in the war. Richard was summoned and he was instantly ganked by black lion and had his power taken, pale Rider is ruler rather than rider because Richard was rider in this version of the war, and some other Greek guy was summoned rather than Alcidies. Basically ended with Flat, Prelati, Dumas, and Tsubaki as the last ones left who all decided to team up to un-fuck the world

This is what happened in Camelot. He was summoned as Berserker, John manifested and killed him but somehow his brother's saint graph stuck around on his armor and John who was having a breakdown over killing his brother took it to take revenge on what forces his brother to be a hero/monster. So he started to destroy the crusades and then the Round Table as the False Richard. A Rider Richard was summoned to a Snowfield without Ayaka, and Richard did the same, but somehow manifested with that Armor so started to get things downhill on his revenge. It's actually exposing Richard's darker side and exploring his relationship with John that was teased in the LN. And revealing he's one of his Rounds of Lionheart.
