When you watch anime adaptations, do you bother watching the filler episodes?
>>287899687I don't watch anime adaptations with filler. If they have filler, I assume they're badly adapted and go straight to the manga.
>>287899687I don't know they are filler ahead of time because I always go anime first then manga.
In the past anime had to use filler because there were too many episodes and not enough manga content. Now it's the opposite, where you only get 12 episodes (and maybe a second cour years later if you're lucky) where they adapt maybe 1/3 of a manga and so don't even have enough time for the canon content, let alone filler.
>>287899687
>>287899687Given the choice, no. They add nothing. Why waste your time?
>>287902509They're fun and break the cycle of dumb 40 episode long fights.>add nothingNeither do most episodes and the stories are nonexistant anyway.
>>287902812ok but what if the filler adds another 40 episodes of long fightsAnd it has no relation to the previous 40 And it was all leading to the climax buildup of the series but now it isn't
I unironically enjoy filler.
>>287899687The only good filler is Sailor Moon because the main plot does fuck all to develop the characters.
>>287899687only once, the first time I watch it, to know if they happen to include actual canon scenes in it, which unfortunately does happen sometimes
>>287899687The filler episodes are the only entertaining episodes.
>>287904276The only good filler is Z or Yugioh because it builds on or outright surpasses source material.Nothing you're about to mention past this post even competes with Orichalcos as an arc.
There's literally nothing wrong with "filler" episodesYou zoomers are just angry because it makes your speedwatch sessions longer and interfere with your "muh lore" obsession
are filler episodes even a valid concept in anything but the most googoogagababy 'we must air something of this every season or our fans will forget about us and go back to cocomelon" shounen?
>>287903278>And it was all leading to the climax buildup of the series but now it isn'tNo, it was all builing to nothing and you were just gonna get another 200 episodes of mindless fights either way.
filler sucks only when you are watching/reading along. after it's complete you can blast through it without much problem.
>>287899687Yes, though I guess it depends. I'm currently watching Sailor Moon and like >>287904276 says, the manga is all plot and the characters barely get to interact.
>>287899687Rurouni Kenshin season 1 (OG , not soulless remake) was comfy with its fillers.
>>287899687For Dragonball (OG) , I watch DB Recut which is a fan-edit with filler removed.
>>287904648DBZ is a case where the line between filler and canon gets quite blurry. Toriyama himself is involved with lots of filler. Filler shit sometimes gets mentioned or integrated into canon, sometimes contradicts it.
>>287908359that driving filler was nice and matches canon in the cell game
the only filler I skipped is shippuudens and even then I watched some of them
The only truly bad filler run I watched was OG Naruto's from episode 136-220. No good arcs. No good plots. Totally random missions. No attempt to tell any good stories. Made up filler moves that would never be seen ever again. Not a single filler integration into the main story. Just 2 years of nonstop padding. Those were dark days.
>>287899687Good filler that pads out the world and story? Yes.Bad filler that's just puff pieces and beach episodes? No
>>287899687Controversial opinion: I think DBZ's filler largely improves the overarching story by a lot. It really adds the most to Gohan's character and by the time of the Cell saga it makes you appreciate him alot more. I haven't watched the filler past the Cell saga, but up to that point it's all actually really good and also gives you bits of the old dragon ball sense of fun and adventure as well. All except the Garlic Jr filler arc, that one sucks and makes no sense lol. Otherwise I think my opinion stands
>>287909546 This isn't even that controversial desu. The Saiyan saga and Namek filler does a LOT of heavy lifting for Gohan. Watching him actually survive in the wilderness, get scared, cry, push through it-it makes the Cell payoff hit way harder than in the manga where it kinda speedruns his trauma.People forget how dry early Z would feel without that padding. The extra Namek bits, the extended training, even stuff like Goku on Snake Way gives the world a sense of scale. DB was always better when it felt like an adventure instead of a spreadsheet of power levels.Garlic Jr. though? Yeah that arc is like a weird anime-only fever dream. It’s not even offensively bad, it just exists in this awkward nowhere space. But overall I’d take Z’s “slow burn filler” over Kai’s hyper-compressed pacing any day. Z feels lived-in. Kai feels like you’re checking plot points off a wiki.
>>287899687For shoneshit I only watch the fillers, they're the best part
>>287910983>Kai feels like you’re checking plot points off a wiki. This, well said. I'd also like to add that Z filler does a great job of expanding Vegeta's character. Without it, it sorta feels like he just goes from one kind of asshole to another kind with no transition once he gets super Saiyan. In Z filler though it really shows his psychosis after Namek over not being able to be the legendary super Saiyan himself. First he is on a search for Goku, and then after seeing Trunks also be able to become a super Saiyan and realizing that any Saiyan can achieve that state, it really drives him crazy. So once he finally gets it, it makes way more sense why his ego is way out of control in the cell saga. People just remember the highlight events of dragon ball and go "oh ya it makes sense Vegeta is like that, it's in character for him" without actually thinking how Vegeta acting almost retarded in the cell saga makes no sense vs how he acted in namek saga where he was much more strategic
>>287899687Only if they are good like the G8 arc from One Piece or have hot girls.
I like it when I can't tell what's filler. To this day I've never read Dragon Ball and never plan to. It's all canon to me. Except Garlic Jr return.
>>287914475Not to be a total powerlevelsfag but especially after coming off of the Namek arc which was pretty explicitly about power levels it was a totally maddening arc to see Garlic Jr doing literally anything to Gohan, Krillin, and Piccolo. Piccolo in particular makes no sense, even if he was "weakened" because he had a power level north of a million and garlic jr last time we saw him was hovering around a power level of like 1000. Krillin should have been able to body him so hard alone, but the entire arc just feels like an endless fever dream of being unable to touch guys who the good guys should be literally 10s of thousands of times stronger than
>>287914978I had no problem with the Garlic Jr arc except for me being confused and not knowing who he was because I haven't watched that movie.
>>287916412The movie is pretty good, has some great animation, the filler arc is total ass. I'm not really sure what they were trying to do with it other than bring back some of the dragon ball vibe. It didn't work that time but the guys in charge of the filler really understood dragon ball and usually did a good job capturing that spirit and putting it into Z
