It is natural for people to want to like the protagonists of the the fiction they read, it is a necessity for many people to have a likeable protagonist character to enjoy the series. So when signs might point toward the protagonist having disgusting, off-putting traits but nothing has actually happened with those traits, they'll give the character the benefit of the doubt and expect the character to do better when the chips are actually down. Later on, when the character doesn't do better and actually acts on those disgusting, off-putting traits, the audience will get upset because they can't like the character anymore. This wouldn't happen if the author simply decided not to make the character have these traits in the first place, and that not every story deserves to be told.
