I think she was overly cheerful because she was just a child, plus she's always shown with her parents/family and not with other people. I mean, it's also portrayed like that to make it painfully clear to the viewer that these were better times, yes she was happier.But, there is a difference to be made between grief, depression, and Chino's actual personality, which is still reserved and soft spoken in nature. In my opinion her depression was shown in the way she interacted at first, putting up emotional barriers and stuff.
