Ranma is such a do-over of Urusei Yatsura that it's kind of ridiculous and it's refreshing to see what Takahashi had in store for Shinobu winning because she gave all of that glory to Akane. It's also good to see how much she learned to avoid another Lum incident of the sex pot taking over the series. First thing that had to go: The bikini. Shampoo was kept in the most ornate and concealing dresses of any of the other characters. Then the timing. Shampoo gets introduced WAY later, she has already lost her 'tag' battle, so we don't get emotionally invested. She ends up getting turned into a cat, exciting Ranmas' phobia putting more distance between the two of them. Finally, Shampoo doesn't live near Ranma and only sporadically re-appears. Takahashi made sure that the Shampoo content was small enough that the Lum effect wouldn't take hold, but big enough that her fans wouldn't feel like she was being left out. Smart writing, and learning from your past mistakes, kids.
