You can see a similar pattern with other series. Even a series like Pokemon, which is now known for having tons of porn, had relatively few before 2006, and only has so much now because it's a long-running series so people started drawing more fanarts of the old girls too. Post-2006 you start seeing a lot more people post fanarts online, and thus a lot more people making art because now you can have this huge online fandom instead of just selling to comiket or having to get a job in the field (huge barrier of entry).

I don't care enough to remember where the updated data is, but the short answer is YES. Azumanga Daioh and Love Hina were the first two series that proved just how high anime DVD sales could be. They were a MAJOR turning point in how anime were marketed from that point forward.
