I'm close to reaching 9000 words at the moment so I'm just filling the gaps with specific terminology, the occasional poetic words authors use to show off or typical narrative words written in kana. I can do 3000 words a month since I know most kanji but it's still annoying to get interrupted to check a vocab. Hopefully I won't have to mine as heavily when I'll get to at least 12k, right?
