I miss it but the core concept only works as a high production value Film/OVA. The tv series is trash because the mundane school grind with run of the mill art/animation is not magic. The thing needs to feel magic, the tv series for the overwhelming majority of its runtime doesn't just feel magical it feels mundane.

The movies were side projects that weren't financed and were just animators showing off their skills for the sake of it and both OVA's predated the anime by quite some time.Probably why the other poster described them with giving him a unique feeling, there is really something special about them probably because of the way they were made.Don't get me wrong tho I liked the anime as well and am in no way trying to bash it, its just another format.
