Alright, it is Thursday and I am gonna post the fifth volume of Yashahime Princess Half-Demon. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Yashahime (or Inuyasha) after the dump.Yashahime was initially created as an anime-only sequel to Inuyasha by Sunrise. The designs of the main cast were provided by Rumiko Takahashi. I have not watched the anime. The manga adaptation was made after the first season and was written and drawn by Takashi Shiina, the creator of Ghost Sweeper Mikami and most likely the biggest Rumiko Takahashi fan in the world. As such, I decided to read and story time this series as well. My commentary will be sparse as I am completely new to the series, but I hope you enjoy the look into Shiina's take on the Inuyasha world.Previous thread: >>287813012I will be using the official localization of the manga by VIZ. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.
Cover's on the next page. February 25th, 2023. Author's note:"GS Mikami All Episodes Blu-ray will be released on April 26!"
>>287957122Original title was 十八ノ章 弱点. Also, we have more Furinkan summaries of Shiina's blog. I'll post parts of it as it becomes relevant."In his blog this month Shiina explains that he will try to have more 48 page chapters in the future to move the pace of the story along. He said he had a difficult time squeezing everything he wanted to in, but Rumiko Takahashi told him the story was very interesting, so he feels like he was successful. He explains that Zero's outfit is anachronistic for the Sengoku era, as it dates from the Nara era." Nara era being significantly before the Sengoku era, so it is representative of her longevity rather than an artistic liberty.
>>287957122>>287957087>>287957168Oh boy this is the loredrop episode. You might not care for the first few pages of this one OP but I personally loved it.
>>287957168I don't believe Inuyasha ever got so directly cosmological. I don't think it needs to be said that Amaterasu is not a creation of this manga and is simply the highest deity in Shinto. This is not true regarding the Grim Comet or 妖霊星. Amaterasu does show up in Urusei Yatsura in chapter 105, but Shiina declined to make this page a reference to her appearance there.
>>287957261More Furinkan notes:"Though shown as a large "mountain dog" here, Akuru (阿久留) is spelled the same as the deminutive, mute character from the Yashahime anime. Akuru becomes known as "Tokiakurujin" (刻阿久留神) meaning something akin to "Akuru the Time God". Shiina explains in his blog post that he made these changes with Akuru to connect it to the anime saying only the dog clan could see him (because he is Amaterasu's dog in this version of the story) and to simplify him as the god of time and the master of the Tree of Ages." Very different visually than whatever character is called this in the anime.
>>287957295!>>287957204I'm not opposed to it in principle, though giving any specificity to Inuyasha's varieties of mysticism will always raise more questions than it answers.
>>287957261>>287957295>Some delicious cosmology lore?>In MY favorite semi-niche franchise?Love to see it.
>>287957358More Furinkan blog summaries:"Regarding Riku, Shiina states, "As in the original anime, Riku seems to have had little emotion for a while after his birth. The initial image that Sumisawa-san had of Riku was 'an artificially created replicant that acquires a soul,' and I think this is a common motif in many of Sumisawa-san's scripts. As a rule, the comicalization is reconstructed by drawing on 'Rumiko Takahashi's works through Takashi Shiina's filter' angle, but I can't leave this out.""
>>287957386!!
>>287957400More Furinkan blog summaries:"Shiina states that he has heard fans are curious about the great Dog Demon's swords, but he does not know if he will have time at the moment to dig into issues with Izayoi. He says he has him use Tessaiga against the comet and made the blade look slender like when Inuyasha first used it in the manga. He also explains that he did not wish for him to use any flashy moves, especially not the Meido Zangetsuha because that would contradict Sesshomaru having not seen it in the original manga. Shiina states he is trying his best to avoid creating continuity errors but if one occurs think of this as a different space-time." I realized I forgot to link the blog post: http://cnanews.asablo.jp/blog/2023/02/ Also, in case you're like me and have no idea who Izayoi is, that's the anime name for Inuyasha's mother.
>>287957446
>>287957452I'm unsure what the two terms used here that got localized as power and strength. It is possible they were more distinct terms in Japanese. Or distinct in different ways. I think VIZ did alright though as they do at least have different connotations, even though the differences between them differ depending on context.

>>287957577More Furinkan blog summary:"Shiina goes on to explain that Kirinmaru getting in Sesshomaru's face is supposed to an echo of when Sesshomaru did the same to Inuyasha in Takahashi's original manga. He thinks that Kirinmaru shaking up Sesshomaru is what will lead Sesshomaru to do the same to Inuyasha in the future." I can't imagine many people catching this without assistance.

>>287957823Ah, so Setsuna's fur is hers. Even though it comes off. Apparently Sesshomaru's did in the anime as well in some parts, so.
>>287957842More Furinkan blog summaries:"Additionally Shiina states for ease that he believes all of the dog demon clan lose their powers on the night of the new moon, including quarter-demon Moroha, who he said he is treating the same as a half-demon with regards to loss of powers during the new moon. Shiina further explains, "The place where they say that 'losing my powers is not necessarily a fatal weakness,' is probably 'My Yashahime,' which is decisively different from the anime version. Not only did it reflect the differences in the background settings, but it is also filled with the feelings that a writer like myself entrusts to those girls. At that moment, I felt like 'these are my characters, my daughters' instead of 'my adopted daughters'."" Cute. I wonder if if the anime handled it differently or if Shiina simply decided to focus on it when the anime didn't.
>>287957856
>>287957864
>>287957870Per Furinkan: "Mayonaka (魔夜中)'s name is written with kanji meaning "in the middle of the demon night"."
>>287957893More Furinkan blog summaries:"He explains that "Oharu" is the name of the wife of Mayonaka. He wanted to base her costume on Yura of the Hair, but his editor said a married woman wouldn't dress that way and Rumiko Takahashi said that since she has no connection with Yura there would be no reason to dress her that way." Sorry, Shiina. I know you like her look like everyone else in the world, but this isn't the time or place. I'm sure some people here would disagree.
>>287957488Heya OP, RAWs guy here. The kanji are:>力や強さはひとつではないのだ。>Strength and power are not a single thing.Power is used with "力 (ちから)" and Strength is used with "強さ (つよさ)"
>>287957921Per Furinkan: "The pyramid of bells that the masked huntress uses is called a "kagura suzu" (神楽鈴). The device is three-tiers of bells with six on the bottom, four in the middle and two on the top. These are used as musical instruments during Shinto rituals by shrine maidens (巫女/miko). The kagura suzu is actually based on the fruit blossoms of the ogatama tree. This is the same tree that Kikyo used in her fight against the shrine rats in chapter 328 and the same type of bells used by Hitomiko in chapter 507." I completely forgot about Hitomiko. And the shrine rats, to be honest. I do remember this instrument showing up before though.
>>287957951These cat demon things look familiar too, but I might be imagining it. >>287957928Ah, I see. I don't know enough Japanese to immediately get it, but looking it up, it seems others learning it have been curious about the distinction between the two and it IS more clearcut. 力 is more physical strength while 強さ is more mental strength or strength of character. Honestly, that's kind of what I gleamed from the localization but I feel in English, which term is used for which is a bit arbitrary. Like we can say "raw power vs. strength of character" and we can say "physical strength vs. willpower". Both terms are used in both contexts. Thanks for the clarification.

Also to explain OP, in the anime there was a flashback similar to this where Toga not only used Meido Zangetsuha, but Inuyasha's perfected-blade version. >>287958211
>>287958218
>>287958227
>>287957823>>287957856The anime made a very forced and convoluted attempt to have Towa and Setsuna also born during an eclipse like Inuyasha was in Movie 3 as an explanation for why they also lose their powers in a New Moon like Inuyasha did. Personally, I much prefer the notion Shiina made here that it's just a trait the Dog Clan shares.>>287957842>Only the most devoted boyfriend would notice those things! It's me, I'm the devoted boyfriend. They both look so cute.
>>287958232End of chapter. Furinkan mentions that on Shiina's blog: "Next time Shiina explains he will show what happened to Inuyasha and the others, adding if he does not it will be "recollections of recollections of recollectons". He explains he hopes he can get everything in and make his deadline."

I like this scene because it gives us a fun glimpse into her daily life and parenting, but when she says, "Lord Sesshomaru doesn't look good changing diapers, and I won't let him!" (laughs) Well, in the old days, people of high rank would leave most of the practical work of child rearing to nannies and maidservants. Sesshomaru-sama had prepared a luxurious house and servant women with this intention, but Rin-chan somehow thought that it might be fun and lively to be with Kaede-sama, so she decided to do it that way. And when I opened the can of worms, I found that Kagome-chan's modern style and sense of values would reflect this manner."

>>287958636I uh... am curious what compelled Shiina here. Maybe I'm not enough of an Egyptologist to know the exact reference being made or if Shiina simply wanted something a bit more exotic to justify this form of magic. Maybe it is referring to Neheh?

Sesshomaru's mother must not be happy with Izayoi-sama in her heart, but she is too proud to show it. Even though Inuyasha doesn't really get it, Kagome-chan's stomach churns when she senses it. (laughs)"" Also, I realized I once again forgot to link the blogpost. http://cnanews.asablo.jp/blog/2023/03/
>>287958759More Furinkan blog summary stuff:"Shiina further explains that there is a lot of backstory from the original Yashahime anime that would have been difficult to condense into the manga, therefore he he said he wanted to make clear concepts like "the Grim Comet is bad", "Sesshomaru is caught in the problems of the time" and "Sesshomaru's mother is helping him". He said he explained these broad concepts to Takahashi after the first chapter and she gave him her blessing."Presumably, Furinkan meant "the problems of time" rather than "the time" but I'm not sure. >>287958905So, I'll be honest, I was a bit confused by this. I apparently didn't quite reach the correct conclusion either. Furinkan mentions the following was on the blog:"Shiina explained he wanted to show more of Inuyasha being shot but the page count was already getting too high to fit it in. He said because it is a time loop that Sesshomaru and Inuyasha are trapped in, Inuyasha will save Sesshomaru over and over and he hopes to explore that scene in more detail in a future chapter as well as to perhaps show Sesshomaru's understanding of Inuyasha's innate goodness and willingness to help."So, this might be more on me than Shiina but this is probably one of the first real knocks against the manga for me. This wasn't quite clear to me and honestly, I got more confused in a later chapter. Not foresight, but hindsight is a very cool line, but I definitely took it to mean he's learned of Inuyasha's character rather than anything more mystical.

>>287958976Ah, because her anguish was with the clan (rather than simply Toga), the pearls formed within the clan members. I somehow also didn't quite get this at first read.

>>287959055We normally don't get to see directly into Sessh's head, so this is a little different but it is a bit pleasant too. Definitely a better alternative to him talking out loud to nobody, but if I am going to nitpick... Also, more Furinkan blogpost summary:"Shiina states that if it were only a story about which person was physically the strongest, that would easily be Sesshomaru, but the story would be too simplistic, instead he wanted to build the story around Inuyasha and Sesshomaru's father's line from the third film where he asked what it was that they would protect. Because Sesshomaru does not naturally have those feelings, his realization that he will have to rely upon his daughters creates a more compelling scenario."
>>287959079
>>287959107End of chapter. Per Furinkan on the topic of the blog: "Shiina states that this is roughly the halfway point in the manga and he has explained everyone's motivations and circumstances now."Which given that this is volume 5 of 10, makes sense.
Furinkan doesn't mention it, but I'm pretty sure this page must've been in full color originally. Also, I forgot to mention, the last chapter's original title was 十九ノ章 核心 while this one's is 二十ノ章 炎上. >>287959572Per Furinkan summarizing the blog post:"Shiina discusses the need to analyze Towa's powers in the modern era because of his depiction of the red-streak in her hair indicating her encounter in the modern era with a demon. He states that Takahashi explained that there were very few powerful demons in the modern world and thus he had difficulty reconciling why Towa had white hair in the modern world and did not ever have black hair during her time there. He decided that she had to have some ability to store absorbed demonic energy to maintain her power even during times when it should ebb. He explained that Inuyasha did not cease to be a half-demon and become human when he traveled to the modern era. He needed a theory to account for Towa's hair turning black for the first time in the Sengoku period and therefore said that living in the modern world was essentially akin to a "high altitude training" that caused her body to adapt by storing low levels of demonic energy at all times. He says it is "barely convincing but its all I had time to explore in the manga version." Shiina also states he wanted to keep out any characters from Inuyasha (other than Myoga) out of this chapter since he felt they played heavily in the recent prior chapters."Shiina's pretty candid. He said he had to trim down their back story or the manga would grow too long, but said that by making Oharu a revived, reanimated corpse he thought it would bring a grin to readers after seeing the anime's approach to the story. He said nearly the only thing he left the same was Towa going wild and attacking him."
>>287959881End of chapter. More blog summary from Furinkan:"He goes on to discuss the comparison between Sesshomaru holding Inuyasha in the previous chapter with Towa holding Moroha in this chapter. He goes on to say it has the vibe of Zettai Karen Children, his previous manga and his desire to emphasize familial bonds, jokingly saying that his work on Yashahime might be called "Sengoku Karen Children"." And "Lastly Shiina addresses some "mistakes" that he made and fan responses to it. The first is that Myoga refers to Kagome with honorifics now. Shiina says that is not a mistake, that when she married Inuyasha then Myoga would see her as his master's wife and refer to her appropriately. He said his editor wanted to correct this in the collected edition but Shiina explained his logic in doing so. The other issue was that Shiina read on a comment on a mail-order book website criticizing the mention of Kohaku's awareness of Kagura's death when he was not present for it as shown in chapter 4. Shiina laughs and says "he must have been watching from a distance" though he adds that there are obviously fans that have been steeped in Inuyasha lore for years and years that are liable to catch these details he overlooks."

"Actually, in the rough draft stage, I had drawn a scene in which a mysterious giant demon dog saves a child from the fire, but this was nixed by Takahashi-sensei, who said that even if it was just to pass the time while waiting for his daughters' to do their work, Sesshomaru did not have that much mercy. I had thought that his love for Rin might have made him have some mercy for humans, to the extent that he would often save them on a whim, but it seems that he is not so naïve. Unlike the ever-chill Kyosuke Hyobu, who saves children no matter what they say, the proud demon Lord Sesshomaru is a dark hero of hardcore proportions. He still thinks of humans as nothing more than insects, but he loves and protects Rin and her daughters as much as he can... what's so emo about that, Takahashi-sensei? I'm just a little disappointed that I couldn't come up with a plausible lie that "Since then, there is still a place in Kyoto City's Nishikyo Ward that worships Lord Sesshomaru as a dog god" (laugh)."" Hasn't changed THAT much.

>>287960432Per Furinkan summarizing the blogpost:"Shiina states that Mayonaka's blessing is meant to connect with the "the Blessing of the Five Grains" from Yashahime episode 32. "The scene of the snowflakes falling over the city to bless the half-demon princesses was more romantic than I had imagined, and I thought it was a good way to bring about a change in Inuyasha and the others who had been in a coma."Shiina discusses his vision of Oharu. "Oharu-san is dressed as a twelve-layered matron in order to create a magical midnight change and to make her a part of the midday divinity. In the original story, she was the daughter of a village chief, but here has risen to the rank of a noblewoman in the capital. She was a princess of high rank, but fell in love with a god, died, fell into darkness, and became a demoness in a sexy ninja costume with an ogre's mask on her head. However, the couple were too crazy in love to let someone else die because of their love affair, so they decided to extinguish the fire with flower confetti and treat the burns. Miraculously, there were no casualties, probably.""Here's some more of that Shiina candidness. I do like that he realized these two would be pretty unsympathetic if hundreds of people burned to death during this, so we got this. I spoilered something that is revealed a bit later in this chapter.

He said he feels he accomplished this by having her arms and legs becoming the threads of the web."I'll be honest, I'm a bit spider webbed out. I know we had a yokai who was a web in Inuyasha for sure. Then Naraku had some of that. And then there was the spider silk guy in MAO, but admittedly, that was mainly focused on the spider lady rather than a web person. Then there was another spider Ayakashi that spat a bunch of web in Volume 18 of MAO. I had to shrink this page.

>>287960397Oh this spread is gorgeous. And there’s something very shrewd about making a God that constantly resurrects his dead wife be a parallel to Sesshōmaru and Rin’s relationship. WAY better than the filler episode Mayonaka was in for the anime.

>>287960749Thanks for posting OP! Interesting. Rion uses the Kanji “黑穴” for “Black Hole” instead of “ブラックホール” which is what is typically used to refer to the astronomical body. But at the same time, the latter is actually just a katakana loanword from the English language if I’m not mistaken, so I’m not sure if they would even use that back in the Sengoku Jidai, and the second line’s description of the attack seems to lend credence to it being an actual black hole despite this.I also decided to peek at the blog post from last week here >>287817334 and spotted this.>そしてこっちの世界の是露さまの杖は、ブラックホール的なものを発生させる兵器だと思われます。>Furthermore, it appears that Lord Zero's staff in this world is a weapon capable of generating something akin to a black hole.Shiina does actually use the “ブラックホール” katakana loanword here. So yeah, kinda looks like those are black holes. Wild stuff.Any other RAW requests while I’m here?

>>287973924>Still thing it would’ve been more clever if she went hanyou during the New Moon instead of having that Beniyasha transformation. What sense would that make if someone with less demon blood gains more of it during the New Moon while a half demon loses theirs? It’s fine the way it is.

>>287957386>Towa is shipped with a discount Kagura who’s an incarnation of Yashahime’s main villain>Meanwhile Setsuna gets shipped with Kohaku’s nephewInteresting… What did Sumisawa mean by this?>>287958285>>287958597Here we go, time for another OOC count! It’s the absolute height of characterization disrespect to suggest that InuKag would just reward Sesshomaru for his grooming efforts by letting his child bride live with them while raising their kids for them, like wtf? The REAL Inuyasha and Kagome would sooner shoot an arrow and Wind Scar to his face if he ever DARED had the audacity to request something like this, no way would they ever agree to something like this, not after how they reacted to Miroku’s attempted grooming of an 11 year Koharu. (And unlike Sesshomaru he didn’t even get a chance to do anything).>>287958615>”Hmph! Sesshomaru’s always making excuses so he can stop by!”I genuinely can’t tell who’s saying this here, Kagome or Rin? They already have a bit of a same face going on and Shiina made it worse by having them wear the same hairstyle this chapter. It’d be nice if it WAS Rin and she actually refers to Sesshomaru with no honorifics sometimes seeing as how they’re supposedly married now and all, her still calling him “Sesshomaru-sama” just further highlights the inequality and power dynamic in their relationship that isn’t typical of lovers.
>>287976401>>287958623>”Lord Sesshomaru is so nice!”…Never mind I spoke too soon, it probably was Kagome saying the previous line there. Yet again though a line like this goes to show that a romantic relationship between Sesshomaru and Rin would never work out as they’ll never be on equal footing, Rin absolutely idolizes and pedastalizes Sesshomaru like a little kid would do their parent, to her he’s a literal God who could do no wrong and always knows what’s best for her so she just has to put up and shut up, this is not in anyway conducive to an equal partnership but is in fact RIPE for grooming. Rin still doesn’t treat Sesshomaru like her husband but like her Hogosha, she will never ever see him for the flawed man he is and call him out on those flaws the way Kagura did, to her he’s perfect, and this kind of relationship dynamic between lovers is also one Rumiko would never write and is yet another indication that this is nothing but glorified fanfiction because Rumic couples are always equals and aren’t afraid to call each other out on their bullshit if nothing else, Sessrin as a ship is something she would never ever write on her own.>”Though he’s also tried to kill me…”…And groomed his literal child ward right in front of your very eyes? You forgot to mention that Kagome, funny considering how quick you were to judge Miroku when he at least never even touched Koharu, OOCness strikes again!>>287958759>Sessmom losing her cool like that in such a comedic mannerI know she only appeared for like one chapter in the original but this still feels OOC…
>>287958759>Sesshomaru's mother must not be happy with Izayoi-sama in her heart, but she is too proud to show it. Wtf is Shiina talking about here? Toga’s affair with Izayoi didn’t seem to bother Sessmom one bit in the original, so much so that she was still on good enough terms with Toga and was directly working with him behind the scenes in order to help teach Sesshomaru a lesson in humility and compassion, she seemed so unbothered by Toga and Izayoi that she even casually remarked how Sesshomaru seems to take after his father in the fondness for humans department, there was not even a hint of bitterness in this observation, she was stating it very blasé, yet Shiina claims he understands the characters and is doing his best to keep the OG cast IC? Yeah right… Then again I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised seeing as how this is coming from the same guy who thinks Sesshomaru making the first move on Rin and InuKag rewarding him for his grooming efforts by raising his kids and child bride for him is peak in-character characterization!
>>287958689>I hope that crazy fathercon person from the last threads doesn't try to construe this in some negative agenda-pushing light, but I know they probably will.Guilty as charged, but how can you possibly misconstrue this as a positive thing when Shiina is portraying Sesshomaru as an outright deadbeat? Even Inuyasha himself says it, I mean sure Sesshomaru was willing to provide Rin and their kids with her own palace and servants, but why can’t he live together with her and help her raise their kids like a normal husband would? Aren’t they supposed to be married? Yes I know it would probably be awkward for him to live in the same house as Inuyasha but he must not care about Rin THAT much if he’s not willing to put up with that for her.>>287960397The manga parallels Sessrin with Kirinmaru & Rion - a father/daughter relationship - just like the anime didLike pottery! KEKKKKKKKKKK Sessrincels can’t help telling on themselves, even they know their ship is really a father-daughter deep down subconsciously. The one positive thing I can say so far is that Shiina is at least attempting to give Towa a personality, so that’s something I guess.
>>287958905>>287958963>>287958976Not enough people know about Sesshomaru's character development in Yashahime's manga thanks to it's mediocre anime and that is a damn shame.

>>287988068Y'know for someone who accuses Sess of grooming someone and hates the power imbalance that comes with it, you sure like to plant him in a ship where he would've been the one groomed and also would still have a power imbalance.
>>287988279Who says I want Toga to return his feelings? I’m content leaving Sesshomaru a forever single gay man nursing a deep one-sided father complex, as that was always the original canon anyways. Even if he were to hypothetically return Sess’s feelings, his past with Sess is completely cloaked in mystery unlike Sess with Rin, so you can just headcanon that he wasn’t in Sesshomaru’s life till he was an adult and Sesshomaru was completely raised by his mom in his childhood years and it wouldn’t even be contradicted.
