When a drama is well-written, the moments that make you cry feel earned. I think it simply depends on the writing. I cried with Clannad because the payoff was excellent. I didn't cry with the pancreas movie because the film asked me to worry about a one-dimensional girl without personality

No. It's either incredibly emotionally manipulative key works or just good old dumb plot that gets the characters in that situation.
