It's amazing how this guy churns out masterpieces like Tekkonkinkreet, Ping Pong, Sunny, Takemitsu Zamurai and Tokyo Higoro almost every year. Even his weaker manga—Go Go Monster, Number 5 and Cats of the Louvre—are well above average

They translated three chapters, but stopped because apparently the series was put on hold. I saw that he’s going to publish a new book in France at the end of the year in collaboration with Cyril Pedrosa (a French comic book artist)

Sunny doesn't have much of a plot—it's just kids in an orphanage dealing with life. The characters are great, since the author lived there for a while. Tekkonkinreet is about two brothers surviving in a cruel city; you might like it better—there's plenty of action in the manga
>>
>>287975827
Number 5 is great, but the story is a little confusing. Matsumoto has admitted in interviews that this is the only manga he wrote without a script. The art is fantastic, it rivals Zamurai for the title of best artwork of his career

His best work is ZERO
It has spawned many followers
>>
>>287978330
I prefer the manga because of how he draws the action and how he paces it, it just feels like you're staying in between those moments when the ball is in the air and traveling to the other player, it feels like you're in a special place and time is standing still. The anime doesn't have that in favor of MOVEMENT but it doesn't feel as special and while the animation is great I prefer the drawings.
My favorite from him really depends because Sunny, Number 5 and Takemitsu Zamurai often change place for my first place and I loved Cats of Louvre and Tokyo These days close enough.
I would say his weakest is probably Zero and even that one is actually great, just not as great as his others. Tekkonkinkreet is his most overrated.

>>
>>287985409
That’s exactly it. It’s less about “what happens next” and more about just sitting in the feeling of it. Like you’re drifting between memories instead of following a straight line.

Sunny works because it trusts you to just vibe with the kids and their little world without spelling out some grand narrative. The lack of heavy plot makes the small moments hit harder, like you’re remembering your own childhood instead of watching someone else’s story.
