Have you ever attended an anime convention? If so, what was it like? There's one in my area this month and I'm contemplating going.
>>287982046Pre-2020 ones were fun and comfy in a dweeby wayPost-2020 ones are normalfag central and terminally infested with gacha trash
>>287982128>Post-2020 ones are normalfag central and terminally infested with gacha trashGacha trash had already infected it by 2017. What you mean is Vtuber shit.
>>287982046I bought some stuff and got hit on my a few cosplayers then went with my frienss to the weeb rave being held afterwards, bought sone acid, and spemt the night zooted out of my gourd chatting with half naked people about anime and videogames with occasional breaks to hit the dance floor or hit up the arts n crafys table
>>287982046You mean a vtuber convention?
Anime Cons were better in the early aughts for peak normalfag acceptance. It was so easy to be a nerd back then as counter culture. Now it is powered by waifufags and killed and viable acceptance beyond terminally online faggots and pedophiles. No offense!
>>287982046The post con sex parties used to be fun but now theyre just filled with odd drama since its usually the same people hosting them
>>287983220sounds like the obvious solution is to step up and be the new person to start hosting them
>>287983428you have no idea how much money and managing goes into renting out a space for a weekend big enough to sustain thousands of visitors
>>287983524crowdfunding?
>>287982046Europoor here. As of this year I go to two conventions, one mid-sized (pretty much between grassroots and full-on commercial) where anime is only part of the focus, one small that's all about anime. Either way, if you've never gone, I strongly recommend it. Few things have given me such a rush in my adult life than realizing I'm surrounded by nerds fully and unapologetically into the same types of nerd shit I am, all ready to cosplay, talk, attend talks, participate in activities. For a day or two, your interests don't make you a solitary island with few outward connections, but the actual fucking standard. I imagine it's what festivals must have been like for people, back when the world was more tightly knit and mysterious.Anyhow, if you don't like it, just don't go again.
>>287982046Im too old for that sort of shit>30yo unc
You definitely have to go with friends. It gets old after a few hours when you're by yourself; the first time I went alone I bought a 3-day pass and ended up only using 1.
>>287984095I only went with friends in the few years I attended.
>>287984095There is the odd lull after you've walked the floor twice but theres also new costumed fags pouring in over time. Between taking pictures and panels and celebs you can keep busy. I did visit a small con once though and thank Satan it was cheap because the lack of a lot of panels turned it into just buying the odd merch and waiting for the costume contest. Friends do help though
Scandinavian here. I’m old as the bones of my once proud nation. But I attended a handful in my teens in the aughts. I went to the first one in 02, it was. Comfy? I guess. They rented an entire unit wing for Pennie’s and got government funds to pay for it. The auditorium screened movies like ninja scroll and Akita during the day. And the evenings had more obscure stuff the hosts liked (miyuki, vandread, A-ko). The large hall had people selling their leftover mangas, stuff they got In Japan to sell (importing was a lot more complicated back then) Japanese candies, onigiri and some fan dojinshi. All the artists were shy nerds who worked form home and often couldn’t keep eye contact. There was a karaoke competition and a ”cosplay parade” all the stuff was homemade by nerds. There was a sense of togetherness and a lot of smaller local groups met up for the first time. I attended the year after and I had a growth spurt between and lost like 25 kg (oh yeah. I was megafauna sized year 1) and was surprised at the sheer amount of shy comeons and hungry eyes you got. If you had social skills and looked ok you were a deity among lessers. Still, it was starting to enter the mainstream, so it already had the tourists there just for attention. And the people who got into the hobby just to be the best looking people around. And you if you didn’t give them the time of day it devestates them. Oh. It was Also the first place my teeenage mind met good looking girls who were very nice and mega nerds. And my impressionable mind never recovered. And I’ve dated these people or no one since. All in all nice back then
>>287982046Some time ago I mustered up the courage to go to a con.Honestly the experience just made me feel a giant void in my soul.If you strip down all of the glamor the truth of the matter is that these events are just a celebration of unbounded consumerism. How can people feel happy about buying useless trinkets they will forget about in 2 weeks? Why do they wait hours in line for the chance of a meet and greet that lasts 10 seconds? What's the point in paying extra just to see authors of their favorite comics have scripted talks for half an hour: as if it makes a difference if the image on your retina comes from real life or a computer screen? It made me realize that even if I get out of my basement there is nothing on the other side of the door: just another empty desert with brighter colors. At least it was nice to look at the cosplays.
>>287982046Is there a point in going to them if I dont care about cosplay, overpriced merch, panels or celeb talks ?
>>287984811You can meet some pretty cool people there, I made a couple of lifelong friends cruising the so-cal con scene. That was decades ago tho, idk what the vibe would be like now.
>>287984811I only see the value if:>going with friend(s)>panels for JP people directly involved in manga or anime (ex. animation artists, directors, JP VAsAlso if its not too coorperatized. I went to one Crunchyroll was the major host for and it was frustratingly sterile and commercilaized (lots of ads for Crunchyroll plastered around, meet ups only focused on recently airing anime, JP guests looked like they were reading from a script).
>>287982046>Have you ever attended an anime convention? No, meant to go in my early 20s, but never found the time
>>287984811You might find heavily discounted manga and art books
>>287982046Just go, anon. Whether you'll like it or not, at least you'll get to experience new things.
>>287983888This
>>287985291Is 24 too old? It's always been hard for me to gauge this sort of thing. >>287985214I assume you mean on the last day
>>287985324The 30+ crowd is pretty big for a lot of reasons, one being affording attendance
>>287984095I went alone and had a fucking great time for 1 hour, then I had nothing else to do and no one to talk to and left
>>287986038Its one thing to say nothing interests you there, but there's never a shortage of things to do for someone solo if you look at the schedule.I always wish people would talk to me but if you want interaction you have to initiate 9 times out of 10. Talk to the person behind you if you're in a line. Sit near people at a panel and say something. Flag down a cosplayer and take a photo. It really is hard to build up the courage to do all of that though. I know I'm shitting myself before I even try speaking
>>287982046Bring you 3ds if you have one !
>>287982046No because I hate the average anime viewer.
>>287987355>there's never a shortage of things to do for someone solo if you look at the schedule. That really really depends on the size of the con
>>287987730People still bring theirs?
>>287983188Good
