I think humanity is mature enough to collectively admit this was a bad show
>>
>>287989067
And you don't seem to understand
>>
Pseuds think any work that's a bit weird and asks questions is good. They don't care that it never answers the questions and the entire ending is a shitshow.
>>
>>287989067
how so?

a shame, he seems an honest man

>>287989178
>plot goes nowhere
>zero interesting characters
>main hook disappears in the middle of story
>terrible ending (a trademark for 90's anime)
>pedobait autistic loli mc

The only good part is the opening

this, i don't like when stories just purposefully leave a bunch of open plot points not because they ask interesting questions but just because they hope that people fantasizing about what the story could be is more interesting than what the writer actually wrote
indie games do this shit too it's kinda embarrassing, take the whole W.D.Gaster nonsense plaguing undertale/deltarune
it's a shame because lain does get some things right, it has a very good eye for atmosphere
>>
>>287989100
A person talks in such generalities that everyone can understand him and it's considered to be some deep philosophy. However, I would like to be very rather more special and I would like to be understood in an honest way, rather than in a vague way.

Texhnolyze and Haibane Renmei did everything that Lain did but better. People here tend to bitch about Texhnolyze being artsy, but there is an actual point to that artsiness besides itself (being to alienate the viewer just like how Ichise has been fully alienated from everyone and everything by the end of the series. Say what you will but there IS a thematic point to it all which also strengthens the characters, which is something Lain doesn't do). Meanwhile Lain just does shit without rhyme or reason. The plot is a fucking mess filled with absolute nothing characters I just don't care about. I don't care if you ask questions unless you give me a reason to give a shit, and Lain doesn't give me a reason to give a shit.
Maybe I'm just retarded, or maybe everyone else is retarded, or maybe we are both retarded in different directions; I don't know, but I do know that to me absolutely nothing about Lain is worth remembering, let alone praising. It's one of the most over-fucking-rated anime I have ever seen in my life. I mean, just who even is Lain as a character?
>>
>>287990177
Checked.
Haibane Renmei is one of my favorites. It came to me at a particular time in my life that amplified its meaning as well. Thank you for writing what you did about Lain, I couldn't quite place a lot of what I felt about it, but what you wrote is pretty much a more fleshed out version of what I could have. Lain could have been good it had a really sick atmosphere.

Haibane Renmei is one of my favourite anime of all time too. It's just sad that people often overlook it. At least it still gets threads on here from time to time.

>asks questions is good. They don't care that it never answers the questions
Good art makes you think and reflect. It invites you to find your own answers. If it gives you the answers, it's preachy and the author is basically shoving his beliefs down your throat, and people hate it whenever it happens.
>>
>>287989067
It's prime example of nonsensical symbolism
>>
>>287991944
It's okay for the author to shove his beliefs down your throat if he's based
>>
I think it was a good show until the obligatory "we made this shit as we went along so here is some bullshit that barely makes sense to close the story".
>>
>>287989067
>humanity is mature enough
Never bet on that
>>
it was a good show. direction-wise is excellent. the story is about this being discovering what the fuck she is while those trolls retards are trolling her. God's plan makes sense, but its morally wrong, and Lain, his creation, realizes that. besides, you have all these groups behind him. the ambiguity is intentional. if you think is bad/dont understand it you are unironically low-iq.

personally i dont really like this show because every detail is important and i prefer relaxing shows. haibane renmei is better, i agree with those anons
>>
>>287990177
Lain identity being ambiguous is totally intentional and the main reason she is a good character. But if you watch the show you can see she was created by that guy, controlled by the knights indirectly and that she was basically a god after mixing reality with the net. Then she saves everyone because her friend was scared

lain isn't perfect, but we all love her. This is a show from a time when people dared to do something different even if it meant it might not be liked by all. You wouldn't know about that my sweet summer child. Go watch the vending machine Isekai or whatever it is you kids deem "a good show" these days.

Depends on how it's done. The show itself ought to reflect on the possibilities and play with the questions it asks, you can't just throw random questions and do nothing with it. Besides, sometimes there is a definitive answer or at the very least the show can give different perspectives that lead to different outcomes. You can disagree with the characters or the narrative, in fact the author himself can very well write something he doesn't believe authentically if he's remotely competent.

And every great story has some type of message behind it that it tries to preach to the reader where the author has most likely already made his conclusion, that doesn't mean it won't make you reflect and think and even arrive at a different conclusion. I can give the example of «Gattaca» where the author makes MC essentially rebel on an individual level against the system that is transhumanist in hopes of achieving his dream of being an astronaut. I, on the other hand, saw this movie as a representation of the archetype of the parasite in society that actively attacks its superior host and attempts to replace it which reminds me of certain groups, rather than take at its face value its critique of transhumanism. At the end, it made me reflect in a completely different direction despite the clear message of the movie even in spite the fact I'm not a transhumanist either.

>>287997150
I also forgot to mention that you can also play on the framing of the question or the theme that the narrative touches upon, but as I said, you can't just sit on it and do nothing even if the author never gives a definitive answer it still needs to develop the ideas behind what it's being told through the story.

What's the point of plot when it's always the same stories and once i know a plot i've mined all it has to offer but themes and resonances can be absorbed multiple times during one's life then unfold into different shapes depending on the state of the decryptor. A piece veiled in metaphors and unsaid messages will never be over. Silence my anime.

that is so completely not a valid complaint that I can only tell you to kill yourself and have Lain reset the timeline so you can kill yourself again

Filtered. There is enough room to make interpretations, that's why it's called art.

You faggots are the reason any level of nuance in media is dead because you want to be spoonfed like fucking children. Kill yourselves.

>Meanwhile Lain just does shit without rhyme or reason.
Lain was made in tandem with the videogame that released later the same year. It makes more sense when you put all the pieces together. Not that art has to have any coherent meaning to leave an impression on someone. The game is a lot more straight forward, and the anime is almost like someone took the characters and the ideas from the game and made an abstract reinterpretation of it. I wouldn't tell you to go out of your way to play the game because it doesn't look particularly fun, but there are some good videos out there about it (or, at least one, because I watched one and it was good). That being said, the reason Lain is as popular as it is (and increasingly so) is because of its aesthetics and its subject matter. The whole idea of The Wired and Lain's internet-induced paranoia and detachment from reality has only become more relevant as time has gone on. The plot is not the show's selling point but it has other things going for it.

did you play it or not? if not then shut the fuck up you fucking bot

I finished reading your post and yep, definitely a bot, bots can ingest video transcripts but they can't experience games
