I cried.
>>
>>287993879
I'm still waiting for a movie that makes me feel the way this one made me feel.
>>
>>287994029
I unironically haven't found anything else like it. I guess the message of Spirited Away is supposed to be something like, "stop and smell the roses, because the world has so many amazing secrets in it, you just have to look for them". But I can't think of any other movies with that same message.
>>
>>287993879
I saw this in theaters the year it came out. I'd never heard of Ghibli or Miyazaki and we just happened to see it on a whim. The theater was packed. The audience was great. Most amazing cinematic experience of my life.

>"stop and smell the roses, because the world has so many amazing secrets in it, you just have to look for them".
I feel like all Ghibli movies have this message but aren't as pure in presentation than Spirited Away. Her life isn't completed by making friends or finding love in the end. Her parents aren't suddenly better people. She just sees herself and the world around her with more gratitude and compassion, and suddenly her life became beautiful.
>>
Do you all remember the Gainax guy who theorizes that Haku is Chihiro's dead older brother who died saving her from drowning and that's why her parents are so cold to her?
>>
>>287994841
cold? seemed pretty normal to me
>>
>>287994875
There are little details that reveal casual coldness. For example they were going to leave her alone by the car and head through the cave without her. When Chihiro clung to her mother because she was scared, her mother only told her "don't cling like that you'll make me trip". They both headed off without her in the field after saying they were only taking a quick look. When she almost falls on the rocks they don't show concern or try to help her up, but the dad was very doting on the mother when she stumbled on the rocks. The dad is overall nicer but the mom doesn't smile at Chihiro and her face often drops when she looks at her. Whenever she was worried about some reckless thing they did they pretty much ignored her and did it anyway, especially when they stole food at the restaurant. Considering they ended up turning into pigs, if Chihiro had stayed behind at the car she would have become an orphan that day. She loves them anyway but they're not the best parents.

This poor girl goes through so much shit in this movie.

Am I the only one who unironically likes the English dub more than the original Japanese?
>>
Miyazaki has no idea how to make a thematical structure the foundation of a story instead of stopping points during the arc.
>>
>>287996710
Miyazaki seems to intentionally hire amateur voice actors with few exceptions. The better I get at hearing nuances in Japanese acting the more I notice how wooden a lot of his characters sound.

I saw the stage play of this a few years ago, it was utterly fantastic. I really recommend seeing it if you have the chance.

>"stop and smell the roses, because the world has so many amazing secrets in it, you just have to look for them"
is that actually true though?
>>
>>288000562
it's true depending on where you look
if you forced Miyazaki to live in mumbai for a year, he would become a totalitarian eugenicist

sound like regular old Japanese parents to me

How's it like being a girl for ghibli male characters?
>>
There's so many scenes in this movie that I liked. The one with the "stink god" and the train scene in particular are so good.
>>
>>287993879
In hindsight, this movie made no fucking sense.
>>
>>288008401
animism and spirituality are supposed to be like that, and that makes it cool
fictional religions are never as interesting as real ones because they don't have weird shit that originated in some peasant village centuries ago and makes no sense to the modern man
>>
>>287993879
It’s the best, I think in general Porco Rosso is my favorite but objectively Spirited Away is his best film.
>>
>>288009033
Porco Rosso is for certain one of my favourites as well, I love the scenes of flying over the Adriatic Sea. I think Mononoke-hime might also be close to Spirited Away in terms of the best, but it's tough.
>>
>>288009307
I think Porco Rosso stands out because it’s the one most grounded in reality, literally the only magical aspect of it is that Porco turned into a pig, but even that is pretty much just a metaphor. Thinking about it no I guess The Wind Rises is actually the most grounded one, but Porco Rosso is grounded while also maintaining the classic adventure aspects of his previous films.

He might have learned his name, but he will never get back his home. It's long gone now.
>>
>>288008401
Miyazaki just has the habit of ending his movies with "and then everything just worked out somehow."
He did it with Spirited away and with Howls moving castle.
Just throw a bunch of stuff at viewers and hope they dont question it.
I never cared about the end to spirited away and hearing actors pronounce these long names and recalling memories without buildup just gives me nothing.
>>
>>288006336
Relevant to my interest in the dynamic of "pitiful men and the high-octane women they worship."
>>
>>288009428
Haku did tell Chihiro he had known her since she was small, and he remembered her name but not his own.
>>
>>288009428
>Spirited Away
>and then everything just worked out somehow
lol it’s shown exactly how things worked out did you even watch the movie

What I want to know is what happened to the Ohgino family after they return and there's all this new growth surrounding their car. Were they pronounced dead? Will they keep the house? Is Dad fired now?
>>
>>288009364
Yeah that's definitely the case. There's also a quote from Miyazaki I remember from somewhere where he talks about how it's a story for adults, but he thinks that's why it didn't do so well (apparently).
>>
>>288009574
>story for adults
>his most childish movie to date
>>
>>288009428
That's pretty dumb, Miazakis endings working out is because the plot is contingent on its characters emotional arc. Princess mononoke - the characters realize that they have to live in harmony with nature so while the spirit god doesn't coem back to live he doesnt have to kill all humans. Spirited away - the characters realize they need their individuation through chihiros example and don't need to live under babas rule (ergo her spells get broken). Moving castle - Howls cure is literally being heartless, and Sophies love breaks his curse (pure love of course breaks all curses)
>>
>>288009428
>hearing actors pronounce these long names and recalling memories without buildup just gives me nothing
Same.
>>
>>288009574
You can't really get into Porco's mindset without living long enough to become a similar sort of world weary cynical sad sack, or at least, you shouldn't be a child and be able to understand.
