The shot of Motoko fighting some weird female cyborg strikes me as familiar too, an early story about corrupt politicians being targeted by sex slave cyborgs (which got mined for the Innocence movie).It'll be interesting to see exactly how faithful it is. The manga is, to me, by far the least palatable to the mainstream of the versions. It's the original, so it stands apart just on that. But it's kind of got all of Shirow's weird little pet ideas and fetishes stuffed into it. It's largely without sentiment and wildly swings between serious and goofy. It drops tons of interesting ideas and themes, but focuses most strongly on the absolute batshit and completely indigestible personal metaphysics of Shirow. The Oshii movies hew most closely to that, but severely sand down the imagery and language to focus very slowly in on the existential, ego aspects of it, not the otherwise completely uninteresting to most people talk about how the fucking universe works.

This might sound autistic but my favorite detail of this adaptation is Motoko's nails being painted and manicured. No other version of the character does this but the Manga Major, she's somewhat of a fashionista.
