>>288054788I read the first few chapters of this manga and then jumped to a random later chapter. The reason I did this was because I wanted to see whether the insufferable, smug, self-aware and ironic writing of this manga that has been in it since chapter 1 would continue on for the rest of the manga. It was a test on whether or not I could bear to continue reading. So I specifically landed on chapter 12 after doing an eeny, meeny, miny, moe.I got to pic related and I decided I had had enough of this manga and was not going to waste any more time with it (I was already on extremely thin ice with the self-aware "manga running" panel earlier, but pic related was what was the final nail in the coffin for my patience with this manga's writing).I get the feeling the hipster author of this manga is writing this manga out of contempt. Nothing about it feels sincere. Here is a character (Rinko) in a quiet moment of vulnerability, opening herself up and pouring her heart out. And the MC interrupts her by ordering gyoza. One could argue this is just a case of the MC being insensitive. But it just felt like the author was telling the reader not to take this shit seriously, since it signals that he could do shit like this as tonal whiplash whenever he feels like it (something that he has no trouble with in past chapters with all the aforementioned self-aware writing and genre awareness moments he peppers into the dialogue). That is all. I'm not here to poop on your fun if you actually enjoy reading this. I'm not gonna be a thread troll. I'm not going to convince you to not like it if you like it. I just wanted to say my piece. Thanks for reading my blogpost and TED talk.

>>288055218>he's done nothing egregious for a while noware you flaming? His last work is a "romcom" with no actual romance, he baited readers into an orgy just to sell the volume but didnt even deliver on that, it ended with a timeskip where he picked the popular option, not the organic one, he wrote jokes and then gave up on actually working on a substantial part of the story.Even had the couple say they didnt why they picked each other, with the MC just saying that simply because she was the first one to confess, there was no romance, no real dates.People who support it and or spread it are normalfags who just read popular shit and are poisoning Manga with their shit taste.

I thought the Whedonism was more of a Marvel movie thing than something really prevalent in the comics, though I am a little out of the loop. And is it actually why people say they prefer manga to American comics? I've mostly seen people say it for different reasons
>>288057820Well, this is my first experience reading anything by this author. And if you're right that the author has always been like this, then his works are ones going to avoid in the future in case I'm looking for something new to read. Everything about his writing that I've seen in Umine the Island Inn reeks of the author's insecurity about what he's doing. >>288058556>I find it funny how this the type of stories people who declare the superiority of Manga over western comics consumeThere is nothing inherent in the medium of manga that prevents smug, ironic, 4th wall breaking, trope-savvy hipsters from writing within the medium of manga. It's a medium, not a specific artistic movement committed to specific artistic ideals.
>>288058727Nisio is not ironic in any way whatseover.
>>288059078Madoka is chockful of meta obsession, it reminds me of "ready player one".I am upset how these are the sort of stories that reach the mainstream and the surface, since Medaka box is a series over 200 chapters long featured in one of the biggest Manga magazine Jump.Oshi No ko, again pretty damn big.I am sorry if I come off as saying/implying that the biggest reason people read Manga is to get away from Western comics, I am just tired of how irony poisoned the world has become, too often Mangaka seem to think that lampshading means they can be excused for indulging in very boring tropes.
>I'm not here to make a blog out of my insatisfaction with the garbage that is romcom nowadays>proceeds to make a blog out of itDon't worry, i'm not excusing developments like in Hajimete no Gal (that particular case was truly infurating) but honestly, while it's debatable that manga got worse with time, major truth is just that you grew up and started to notice the ever-repeating cliches around in manga in general, particularly in romcomSo if you don't like it just fuck off, but you're really not saying anything new, just venting like a sperg
>>288059242>So if you don't like it just fuck off, but you're really not saying anything new, just venting like a spergThis is stupid anon, do you also complain when people call out terrible practices in games like what pay2win or gacha do to keep you connected? If is not anything new then why do you keep indulging trash instead of reading and talking about Manga worth reading?
>>288059129Which definition of "ironic" do you normally use? So I can maybe understand why you dont' consider him being ironic.
>>288057249it's actually had the best 1st week sales for its first volume in the magazine since I think Yaergnacht
>>288059129>>288059314While waiting to hear your answer (although I might be in bed by then because is late here)let me be a bit more precise.I strongly dislike the over-use of post-modernism in his writing, I find it self-serving, it tries to be witty to the delight mostly of his writer rather than the audience, is overly referential, and all those references with Manga protagonist talking about being protagonist are not novel, fresh, interesting, or funny, they are trite and lack sincerity, it feels like the writer is afraid of committing to something in which he believes, it feels overly cynic.See also this image, the author created this situation out of a story that started with trying to fix school's problems and a protagonist who got outsted by someone who was out to fix people, but it just ended up creating a battleground. This situation was acknowledge but not fixed, the protagonists ended up separating for a decade giving more importance to work rather than human connections.

>>288059078Whedonism is more about the incessant quips and the characters constantly making le ironic jokes about the situation at hand while pretending they care about it and is very serious and emotional, it's about how the entire cast acts like they find the story dumb amd can't help but to make fun of it
>>288057820I remember Kimi no Iru Machi getting drama heavy later on but it's been a long time since I read it, so maybe it's just exaggerated in my mind now. Suzuka has the teenage pregnancy portion. Fuuka is self explanatory. Fuuka is the only one that's dark but I'd say drama was still kind of his thing, so Cafe Terrace being mostly melodrama free outside of the Fuwa stuff was pretty out of the ordinary.
>>288054801God I love sleeveless clothes and armpit peeks.
>>288062502I think Kimi Machi and Suzuka both had a fair bit of drama throughout.I'm inclined to think Seo just got less drama heavy as time went on, with Fuuka having that one obvious spike early on before turning fairly tame, and Hitman being pretty benign
>>287773534 Does anyone have the others? I can't find the others anywhere.

>>288058556>I find it funny how this the type of stories people who declare the superiority of Manga over western comicsNo? What in the actual fuck are you talking about you /co/mbler tourist? People who do that (and I can't emphasize enough how over the last few years western comics are such a complete non entity in the mainstream discourse that there's barely a need for those comparisons in he first place) would point out stuff like Kokou no Hito, the Kirara mag 4koma Iyashikei types or Gon, stuff that can exist and thrive in Japan but hardly in any western country with a comics history (except maybe France or Belgium) because the Japanese manga market is primarily driven by demand and allows for them without it being labeled as niche or underground.

>>288062891Half and half was also a bit dark.>>288062891Fuuka still had some dramatic moments later on, but other than the truck, it was a bit goofier with more frivolous characters than his previous works. I think his newer works are better if you're familiar with his previous works and know he played the drama straight for well over a decade. It's similar to early Terrace so far.

>>288058836You are disingenuous, the MC getting blue balled always was the manga's one joke. Also in no way it is out of nowhere, the monkeys fucked with him earlier in the arc. reminder the manga is on hiatus until September since the author is on paternity leave
>>288068803>Also in no way it is out of nowhereHow could they possibly get inside that room? And without anyone noticing? And without them noticing at any part of the coitus? And don't try saying that since they had ghosts this sort of bullshit is ok.>the author is on paternity leaveThat guy does not deserve to have kids or a wife.
>>288055098Amusing to see a "what's up with how this kid looks in a flashback" gag coming up here too. Was probably the best joke in Class 2-B Hero Destroyerz so far.
>>288059727I just can't agree, but I'm not in a good space to meet your level of mental effort here, so apologies for that. For me, Medaka Box, and its referential nature in general, is less self satisfied and more the author looking up and nodding at you when something happens, in the expectation that you are nodding at him as well. It's about the author and the audience being in it together and sharing a moment in which their minds are in sync.It also has one of my favorite enters that has nothing to do with being meta or post-modern.
>>288062452You know, you put that pretty well
>>288069158It's a comedy manga none of it matters as long as it ends with a funny joke.>And don't try saying that since they had ghosts this sort of bullshit is ok.I'm wary of this because romcoms tend to go completely off the rails once supernatural stuff gets introduced.

>>288069855I think it's just what Seo does with younger characters. He did it with Rin in Kimi Machi
>>288061723>he was watching his wife's performDaaw.
>>288055444Kazuma interrupts her because he thinks from the start what Rinko's saying is nonsensical. He firmly believes in something Rinko is unable to believe. That's why he's not moved. It's why I like the Rinko and Kazuma dynamic because Rinko resents him because she wants to be like him, but thinks it's stupid. She still holds herself back from being herself because of her upbringing, and then some carefree guy appears acting in a way she wants showing her how easy it is. She can be mean and make fun of him because she's still too scared to change.
>>288069803>>288069852I'd say Yuna or Iori are my favourites so far, but it's still a pretty weak preference. Though I might take a while til I start really liking anyone, I did that with GCT after all
