Do westerners care more about Akira than people in Japan do? It's treated like required viewing in the west by many. But does Japan barely care about this series anymore?

it's the go to "good animation" rec that normalfags know about because they have no deeper knowledge of the medium
it's that simple
>>
it's still heavily referenced and there is still merch for it around. its impact on the medium can't really be overstated. I saw a south east asian traditional concert doing the tribal music from it for a japanese crowd in shinjuku not too long ago.
for the general public yes it's much bigger in the West. you're more likely to see an Akira t-shirt in a big city in your country than you are on a japanese in Tokyo. but it's one of like 2-5 non-Ghibli anime films most people have seen in the West compared to how many over there.

Last season had at least one Akira reference, what are you on about?
>>
There was a 5ch thread not that long ago that got enough traction to get picked up by the aggregators and passed around like a slut on nip twitter where Japanese zoomers were complaining about old anime that their old farts like. Akira was one of them cited by name.
So at some level the nips like that shit enough it annoys their zoomies.

I actually just got to watching it this past week, Ive seen around 200 anime so it took me some time to get to it. Most anime fans I know havent really seen it however thats not saying much since pretty much everyone in their mid 20s where Im at only has watched demon slayer or JJk. Is it people 30+ that are more into it? Idk I did like it quite a bit, but something like Ghost in the Shell 1995 is better in my opinion. I will say though that the character animation is pretty great.

Because it wasn't that good, it was a prestige project that targeted the west, and its critics who did not watch anime before.
It was one of the many matured movies in Japan

Pretty much. It's like the GiTS movies in that it's more of an animation showcase rather than a good adaption of the source material

Are there any references other than the motorcycle slide?
>>
>>288066368
Japs only remember the bike slide. Hell more western shows have referenced the bike slide at this point.
>>
Shame about the ugly character designs.
Otomo's style is so polished yet it looks so bad.
>>
>>288069949
The bike slide is more iconic than the actual movie.

>project that targeted the west
It didn't get an English dub until a year and a half after it released in Japan. The fuck you mean "targeted the west"?
