FMA wasn't good right off the get-go. It took 2003 like 8-12 episodes to get good, and Brotherhood ran through the early material at 3x speed (Brotherhood first 10 episodes versus 2003 which covered nearly the same material and took 25 episodes to get through it). Were you even alive in 2003? FMA2003's first episode is one of the best first episodes in all of anime. If you're not completely hooked at the "You are the full metal... the Fullmetal Alchemist!" then you have no taste for fictional media whatsoever. Episode 2 isn't as good, but episode 3 with the mom flashback is also peak. It's got the episodic filler bits for the next few episodes after that, yes (until you get hit with a trainload of bricks by the Nina parts), but you're already invested at that point.
