Beautiful Man edition>What is this?A monthly thread where we discuss the Vampire Hunter D novels written by Hideyuki Kikuchi and translated into English by Kevin Leahy. Currently, we've only finished Volume 1.>If I don't start reading now, I'll NEVER catch up!Not true. The series is an anthology but it's recommended that you at least read Volume 1 to get a proper grasp of the setting. Feel free to just skip to whatever volume we're on.>What else can we talk about?Avoid discussing volumes we haven't read yet because I too am experiencing this series for the first time. However, discussion of previous volumes and other entries in the series like the movies, manga, and comics are welcome. But keep in mind discussion should mostly be centered on the months current volume.>When's the next Book Club? The 13th of every month. Humanity is just crawling out from under three hundred years of domination by the race of vampires known as the Nobility. The war against the vampires has taken its toll; cities lie in ruin, the countryside is fragmented into small villages and fiefdoms that still struggle against nightly raids by the fallen vampires-and the remnants of their genetically manufactured demons and werewolves.Every village wants a Hunter-one of the warriors who have pledged their laser guns and their swords to the eradication of the Nobility. But some Hunters are better than others, and some bring their own kind of danger with them...
Volume 1 ImpressionsMy views on the world:The first volume of Vampire Hunter D depicts a world molested by ghouls and terror. The Nobility, Vampires the reader quickly understands as massive larpers, took center-stage in running the show and decided to inflict a miasma of monsters, freaks, and mutants upon the Earth. That, combined with the fact that true demons and black magic does indeed exist, results in a setting unlike any I’ve ever seen. I call the Nobility larpers for no small reason; they clearly have a massive superiority complex and willingly chose to create monstrosity after another for vanity reasons or just plain fun. While the book is vague, it’s clear the Vampire race took pleasure in reshaping the world and actively tried to make the legends and superstitious myths of old a thing of reality. Moreover, they utilized advanced psychological conditioning to make Humans afraid of them on an almost genetic level. I, for one, really like this concept. When reshaping the world, they actively chose to enforce this gothic, nightmarish aesthetic because it suited their own sensibilities. While of course a Human would be scared of a Vampire, the Vampires wanted to ensure Humanity as a whole would ALWAYS be scared, to keep up that dynamic. Moreso, the novel directly states that Vampires choose to construct medieval castles built around the design of older myths. In other words, The Nobility assumed the role of what one might think of when they envision a Vampire. That, I think, is the hidden reason as to why their society fell.
>>288072149My views on the story:D is hired to take on Count Magnus Lee, the feared Noble who lives not too far from Ransylva Village. Doris, the young girl whom Count Lee has set his sights on, hires D to kill this dreaded ghoul and keep her safe. Quite quickly, D fails to kill Count Lee and is evidently somewhat bad at his job. Doris nearly dies several times in the novel and is saved not by D, but by other comrades or lucky breaks. Personally, I found Doris’s faith in D to be somewhat forced. While D certainly proves to be strong, he lacked the ability to keep her safe from all threats. In his defense, his job was to primarily kill Count Lee and it was factors beyond his control that kept Doris in harm's way. Greco and his goons along with Rei-Ginsei and his gang of mutants proved to be major dangers for Doris and it was evident during instances when D was absent that these threats would emerge. If his original plan of killing Count Lee was something more than just “Fuck it, we ball”, then maybe he could’ve avoided the altercation with the Midwich Medusas and had returned successful on the first day. Moreover, had he not decided to spend time being a farmstead and hunted down Rei-Ginsei during the day, he may have avoided himself dying altogether. In this novel, D feels quite reactive to events and doesn’t act first often. Even in the final confrontation with Count Lee, it’s arguable D only succeeds because Lee’s cape attack falters after losing concentration. No counter, no successful tactic, just another event unfolding... 1/2
>>288072163To note one last point, because this was the first volume the narrative did suffer from the plot interrupting itself with exposition. This is an entire setting and history that has to be explained to the reader and it’s understandable in my eyes to have to sacrifice momentum to explain finer details. However, nearing the end of the novel it felt unnecessary. For example, ‘Deadman’s hand’, plants that were created by the Nobility, are randomly introduced when Dan is being chased in the forest and then it’s dropped immediately. Moments like that killed suspense and momentum. 2/2My views on the characters:>DD and his left hand, ‘the Countenanced Carbuncle’, are likeable to me. I do wish his left hand got more screentime or that he and D had lengthier conversations without D simply telling the other to shut up all the time. D being described as 17-18 years in appearance was surprising to me, and probably those who’ve seen the movies, but I accepted it. His full backstory is currently unexplained to us, but it’s either that he’s one of Dracula’s children or is somehow Dracula himself reborn (Much less likely). What has D been doing for thousands of years? Who knows. Another thing that’s unclear are his motives. One may say his goal is simply to wipe out the Nobility but he approved of sparing Larmica and even reminisced about the Nobility with a subtle sadness in his visage. At the same time, he stands to keep his promises, goes above and beyond in his work, and harbors a sense of justice. His powers are primarily “Just swing harder and faster, bro” but his left hand offers a very versatile defense and counter against magic, elements, and AOE attacks. He also did become intangible for a moment when fighting Doris in chapter 1, so the full extent of his supernatural abilities are unknown. I like D, but I do wish he took more initiative in the story as I mentioned before.
>>288072182>DorisDoris is a strong young woman clearly out of her league. Being trained by her father who was a Werewolf Hunter, Doris possesses anime level skills with a whip and can go so far as to grab a cigar from one’s mouth and transfer it to another in one motion with her whip alone. However, she’s against a Vampire, the strongest of all monsters, and Rei-Ginsei, a very powerful human with genetic enhancements and abilities. In short, she’s a reluctant damsel in the story. I do feel it's unfortunate how often she’s powerless or unable to defend herself, but that’s how the story chose to unfold. As for her personality, I grew to like her as time went on. Her introduction depicted her as being kind of a bitch with the way she “tested” D, but it’s easy enough to move past that. Her falling in love with D felt shallow, but not in a bad way. Basically, what more could you expect from a seventeen year old girl? This cool, brooding, handsome stranger arrived to protect her and help out on the farm, so naturally she fell in love with him. D was dtf himself, but was interrupted by the angry mob.>DanDan wasn’t insufferable like you’d expect from a child character. From someone who grew up watching Naruto and One Piece, I fucking HATE child characters, especially in filler, because they add nothing to the story and are cringey. But Dan was fine and his involvement in the story helped push the plot forwards. My only complaint is that he was way too verbose for a child of seven. He should not have been able to articulate so well but that’s just a small complaint I have.
>>288072194>Other CharactersGreco was like any other cockroach you’d find in any other series. A lecherous man with power who just won’t fuck off. Not much to say about him. Rer-Ginsei was a devious snake who’d sell out his own mother for some cash. Count Lee was cool and I think his character best represents the Nobility and their downfall. Unchanging and obsessive, he wanted to do nothing but feast on Human blood for thousands of years. Taking Doris as his bride stemmed from personal desire and no other goal or motive, making him stagnant and lifeless. Larmica was kind of a nothing character. Like Doris, she just thought D was strong and hot so she developed feelings. Doris spared Larmica which benefited Doris in the end, but I refuse to believe that she herself wasn’t directly responsible for hundreds, if not thousands of human deaths over her life.ConclusionI think this was a solid introduction to the world of Vampire Hunter D. The book gave us enough to understand the setting while leaving enough out to keep us asking questions. I enjoyed the novel and quickly realised to suspend my disbelief. I wish D had said a farewell to Doris and Dan, but I suppose that’s the point of his character. No goodbyes, no attachments, just his ongoing journey. In a way, he’s as stagnant as Count Lee with the way he won’t form close bonds. If Count Lee is trapped in eternal aristocratic larping, D is trapped in eternal wandering and emotional detachment. I give the book 7.5/10. Nothing spectacular, but I had fun.
>Discussion QuestionsRespond to any of these or make your own.1. At what point does the setting simply have too much going on? How many more threats and monsters do there need to be before it becomes almost comical and outlandish? Or is that the point? Humans are still alive, and there seem to be a number of them around, but realistically they’d be unable to survive past a certain point. Do you think this setting has too many dangers, the right amount, or not enough?2. Is the meta of the setting to just be the speediest? A poster once mentioned that the novel calls D beautiful to a great extent, but I feel that the novel describes speed and fast movement much more often. It seems that every powerful being simply moves at the speed of sound, rendering guns and projectiles obsolete. Do you agree? Is speed the more formidable hurdle to counter against than, let’s say, destructive force?3. How powerful are base humans? The book definitely has anime logic, whereas as long as you train you can essentially achieve feats beyond possibility. Doris and her whip being a notable example of this and Rei-Ginsei and his Shrike Blades being another. In addition, what would (you)r weapon of choice be in this setting? Mine would be a pocket nuke I can only use once because I would die too.4. How do you feel about the part about Humans losing their memories whenever they discover the effectiveness of garlic and crosses? Personally, I found it to be an unnecessary addition. Then again, it does solidify the Nobility’s rule over the world because if every human carried around garlic and a cross the Vampires would have a much harder time feeding. I don’t know, memory alteration just felt needless to me.5. If you’ve seen the movie, how does the novel compare? Which is better in your eyes? Why do you think certain parts of the novel were omitted from the movie and do you agree with those changes?

>>2880722361-I feel despite the world being a complete shithole with monsters everywhere it does get balanced with the technology the nobility have left and they likely enhanced some humans in experiments too 2-Depends on the enemy i suppose3- Hard to say going by volume 1 alone4- It feels whatever, a kind of thing will get ignored later on.

i still miss some chapters, let's see if i manage to finish while the thread is still alive.as for now i can say that the novel is better when it tries to be a gothic\horror novel rather than a fantasy\adventure one. i'm not much convinced by any of the characters, especially the "good" ones.
>>288073641Yeah, I agree mostly. Older pulp fantasy/Sci-fi does this a lot, so it's not a unique issue for Vampire Hunter.
>>288074176I'll try to keep the thread alive. I'm at work but I'll bump and reply when I can
>>288072236I read it. I thought it was boring and didn't have any essence. There are no "themes" or "messages" other than just an adventure with a bourgeois setting. Also, Doris chapters/sections were insufferable. If I'm reading a cool anime-esque book about a vampire hunter the least I would expect is that the main focus would be on the vampire hunter and not a human trying to survive against rapist pedophiles. Also, why was every character trying to rape her every episode? Regarding the first question, the nobility wants humanity to keep living. They are their cattle. They feed from their blood and lust over their women. The japanese have this habit of mixing fantasy with science fiction, in this case it's gothic fantasy with cyberpunk. It's a good combination, but I felt it lacked exploration. 95% of the story happens in a rural town, in the castle, or in a forest. I did like how subtle they introduced the crosses. A "T" in a letter. Do not say more. That said, unlike you, I really liked the character of Dan. Probably my favourite one due to his development. Yes, he is useless because he is a kid, but that's the point.Second and third quesition seem to be aimed for power-scalling and I really do not care about that. Humans losing their memories... The vampires would be too weak without it. I also feel like maybe this will get expanded in the sequels? But I don't think the author really understands what a cross means and just uses it due to the original Dracula using them. I only watched Bloodlust, may watch the first movie but not soon. >t. ESL reading an english book translated from japanese
>>288075889>There are no "themes" or "messages"Personally i don't find it a bad thing instead i find it somewhat charming, a world by itself without pursuing a deeper thematic or message, but i also think it's to soon to bring this kind of talk it's the first volume and i believe the first few volumes will be similar, the work is nearing 50 volumes so the author have more than enough time to introduce those late ron
>>288075889I didn't say I disliked Dan, just that I often dislike child characters in media. Also, the nobility actually don't need humans anymore. It was stated that they actually invented artificial blood but kept humans around anyways. It's a big point of contention for the characters, why did the nobility keep humans around? My stance is that it does stem from their superiority complexes. They need a lower class to rule over.
I think volume 1 presents D at his most vulnerable, comparatively speaking. I enjoyed what I read of the series back in high school (I think I made it through the first dozen or so novels) but D becomes progressively more overpowered to the point that despite absolutely absurdly strong opponents, the reader never feels anything even close to worry for D. There is a charm to that and the author finds ways to introduce worry or uncertainty into the novels through supporting casts that may or may not all survive; but the later novels rarely have any moments that make it seem like D himself is out of his league. This first volume uses D as an extremely strong hunter but I think it gives Magnus Lee the upper hand and really does make nobles seem like insurmountable forces of nature. I like the idea that D is able to handle most threats on the frontier without breaking a sweat and can even cut down younger nobles with ease, but that actual high-tier vampires put him on an even playing field that might even become slightly disadvantaged when you factor in the technology/home field advantage.I like the first volume a fair bit and the setting is wonderful. It reads like what Castlevania would be like if it was expanded to an entire world and not just a castle and the surrounding area.
>>288072138Just posting to say, this is a very good initiative, one that I never thought I'd see on /a/ in 2026. Bless you all.
i hope the author and the translator manage to go back translating , apparently it's dark horse cuckign them out and they are even thinking of just doing it for free
>>288072138Funny how the author bitched about the 80s OVA looking "too cheap" only for the more recent novels to end up having similar art to that OVA, I know the artist got older and sicker, but I personally liked the more "sketchy" look the 80s OVA and the later novels have over the more detailed stuff in Bloodlust
>>288074176Ok, i've finished it and nothing much changed my initial impression. The setting is nice and interesting, pace is good and overall it doesnt lack the goth\horror mood you would expect. Weak the characters, unsurprisingly i guess since the author seems to be a lot better with prose and descriptions, while awful at dialogues.D was more japanese teen meets John Wayne than a stoic byronian hero like in Bloodlust. I hate John Wayne by the way.Doris was just an awful character. Since Larmica also later turns out as quite lame i suspect it's just the writer being unable to write a woman without jerking off his penis (and ego).Dan was an annoying little fag. Very annoying. Annoying and cheesy and lame.Ferringo was just poor men Van Helsing. I'm talking about book Van Helsing, not the cool movie one.More interesting the antagonists though i wont go as far to call them great characters. They were however entertaining enough. It's fun because i think you can actually cut off all the dialogues and the book would pretty much work the same, yet improving its quality. A romhack pdf, you may call it. 07/10.
Sheriff was great in this book. He reminded me a lot of Hol Horse and I thought he'd actually swing around to being a full on good guy. It's nice that there was multiple antagonists. Count Lee (Such a dorky call back name), his daughter, Ginsei and his literal anime behaving goons. This book is seriously fun. Dorky as fuck but fun.
>>288078422Like you said, D being overpowered isn't a bad thing so long as stakes are still present and that the delivery is good. This volume kept the stakes up because D was absent during critical moments and even blundered himself>>288079758Fair enough if you found the characters a bit lacklustre. Yes, much of the dialogue felt corny, especially parts where a character is trying to sound threatening. But I wouldn't say the characters were awful. Dan and Doris were likeable, Larmica just felt like a nothing character, and the side characters like Ferringo and the sheriff served their purposes just fine.>>288080296Having multiple villains helped the story because it made things more complicated for D and Doris. He's strong, but can't be in two places at once
>>288079552I liked the 80s one better than Bloodlust
>>288081746>>288079758i think VHD was one of the first work the author started so i believe the first volumes gonna be somewhat rough
>>288081746>Dan and Doris were likeablethere's a reason why D left without saying a word.
>>288081822
>>288082004
>>288082040
>>288081746My point was actually that this volume is interesting and what makes it good/sets it apart from later volumes is precisely that D isn't AS overpowered as he would later become. As you say, he blunders and as a reader you have the feeling that he may be in real danger when he first goes up against Magnus Lee.In later volumes, even when D does underestimate or make a mistake when he faces off against an opponent, it always feels like D is still supremely advantaged and will win without effort, the enemy was just not as much of a free win as he first thought. I like how in this volume you do get a couple of moments where it feels like D is not just going to have to try hard to win, but he may actually lose.
>>288082354Ah, I see. Well, I look forward to seeing how broken he is later on. I can bait Hellsing fans and say that D low diffs.
I see people are dunking on the dialogue which I understand. But I think that elevated it in a way. It was like reading a B-movie. Or better yet, it was just like reading how someone would write an anime. Which is kind of surreal but I enjoyed it. Like, why on Earth would you write out the quirks of anime's medium? Who cares, reading quotes around werewolves going, "Awooooo!" and characters constantly saying, "You can ponder that in the hereafter" was fun. Also, seeing fucking flash stepped explained with one of the mutants is hilarious. I hope the other books are like this. And again, I don't know if I'm driving this home enough, but you would think a writing style that fits the bill of a fanfic author parodying anime fights would be bad but I really did enjoy this book. If this is how pulp fiction reads I'm willing to try other stories.
>>288072138>>If I don't start reading now, I'll NEVER catch up!It isn't that difficult to catch up, when you've got something like 30 books over 40 years. I'm reading slop on an average of one book every two weeks.
>>288082921Yeah i enjoy, those thigns too one thing i always get bothered is those works that parodies some tropes and sometimes i will think "where is the work with that fucking trope?" I can barely withstand the parody/irony that every work have to show nowadays >>288083034its closer to 50 but not much different, though Kikuchi have other works too, i think i might buy the makai city series since i cant for the love of god find anyone that have it i might as well get it for others
>>288079758Gotta agree that the dialog was noticeably bad. It was actually a little jarring since I remember reading the early chapters where this eerie mood is being set and then the moment a character opens their mouth it all fell away. In my notes I wrote that it felt very much like light novel dialog
>>288082683A more interesting question would be 'after what book does it become clear that D low diffs'. I maintain that D is one of the strongest characters in fiction and some of the feats he gets up to in even the middle books are extremely bullshit.>>288082921Volume 2 is a bit of a stinker from what I recall but then you get a pretty good run ranging from excellent at best to maybe a little below average at worst. The Bloodlust movie is based on book 3.
>>288083799VHD is a LN series anon
>>288072138Finally a thread that's actually worth having
As someone who reads a lot of western sword & sorcery, D is way less of an Elric than I expected. My biggest complaints were the dialogue and maybe what I would call anime-isms? For example the whole 'dimension-twister' thing felt stupid to me, being a special ability that Rei-Ginsei just has for some reason. On a mechanical level it totally reads like something that belongs in an anime/manga rather than a non-visual medium, but even then it's not integrated into the story in any meaningful way. A better or more-experienced writer would have played it up as the result of a stolen dark artifact or went into detail with it being the result of Nobility genetic tampering. As it stands, it adds nothing to the story except to stretch my disbelief.I also groaned at the idea of forgetting garlic's usefulness when they discovered it, but that's less of a big deal for me.As far as positive things, I obviously loved the illustrations, and the setting is really well conceived. I'm especially interested in seeing the vampire capital because there's so many cool things that could be done there. Count Lee's castle and the underground chambers were really cool and I would much rather have had more of that than some of the Greco and Rei-Ginsei hijinks that were getting tiresome by volume's end.Overall I had an okay time. I'm pretty sure that I have heard this first volume is a weaker one so I will chalk it up to inexperience and will probably return next month.
>>288084165is it actually marketed as one? i feel the generic LN book is quite different in terms of vibe, i suspect at least the first volume got more influences from western horror\fantasy stuff.
>>288084161>The Bloodlust movie is based on book 3.that's nice to have it so soon, i'm actually curious about how it stands compared to the movie (which is awesome if you ask me).
>>288084331It has been published from the startt by a light novel publisher , it even have the LN layout with roughly same pages as well the illustrations i don't have psychical version so i can't speak of that.
>>288075889>I did like how subtle they introduced the crosses. A "T" in a letter. FUCK I'm an idiot. I'm gonna blame it on the font in my copy doing that lowercase t with a curved bottom and the fact that I was probably reading that section in a 90 degree car, but I somehow assumed they were referencing garlic as the hidden weakness
>>288084165I know, but it felt *especially* like a ln series, if you know what I mean? From the first encounter between D and Doris, I was a little shocked that their back and forth was closer to something I would read in the monogatari series than in any western fantasy I've ever read.
>>288084670I think that's just a expectation thing, i never thought of western books as much better so i didn't get throw off by it.
>>288084756It was definitely at least part expectations. I don't want to dwell on the dialogue because I really did get used to it over time, but there's something about the way Doris calls D 'You dolt!' that is characteristic of anime and ln dialogue to me. I don't know if it's the translation or a reflection of the original but that word and some of the stock phrases in chapter one made me think of exchanges involving Araragi from when I was reading the monogatari series
Anyone else catch the Charlie Chan reference when Greco looks at the register in the inn? I just looked it up to confirm and the wiki is trying to gaslight me into believing the fictional detective it's referring to is named Charlie Chang instead of Charlie Chan.Wonder if there are any other references I missed?
>>288072138>editionWe don't do that here.
>>288085190There havent been a book reading in years either unless i managed to miss it

>>288085362it is sold as one its just kichiku way of writing i guess... I wonder if Guin saga is similar going through 150 volumes is a bit of a task though
>>288085362That's what I've heard. The original Japanese apparently make it a difficult read while the English versions definitely have that LN feel.
>>288085478>the English versions definitely have that LN feelthis is true only for the dialogues.
>>288085478Comparing some dialogues it does seem translation add some change in emotional tones, like adding "!" for example and changing the way the original line is conveyed
>>288084316I was waiting for someone to bring up the Dimension-Twister thing. Of all the bullshit in the book, I think D deducing Rei-Ginsei's ability by the sheer fact that Rei-Ginsei purposefully shifted his body ever-so-slightly while in mid-air to be the biggest stretch. D's thinking was literally:>My opponent shifted his position during his leap... hmm, now my sword is aimed for his heart... he MUST be a Dimension-Twister!All of that in 0.1 seconds mind you.
>>288085520also if i have to judge by this post >>288085328 the dialogues in japanese may even be more LN-like. i mean, we have literally anta baka here.
>>288085562It's just "Baka" and no the anta baka one, pretty sure that one only started with asuka
>>288085632spouting baka and anta is still tsundere tomboy behaviour.
>>288085751I'm not saying there is no LN feeling but i don't think it's that much in the original from what i've seem ,there are stuff that simply transcends time in JP
>>288072194Honestly I thought Doris was really cool at her introduction and was let down at how they sanded off her edges. I know the story justifies it by saying that she finally found some one to rely on after standing on her own for so long but she deserved to kick at least a little more ass.
I don't know how much more I can post today, but thanks to everyone who joined me in reading Volume 1. The fact that there were actually quite a few of you who followed along and that the thread didn't die after the first hour is awesome. For those who just heard about this now, I posted a thread over a month ago telling /a/ about my plan to read through this series. So, if you missed out on this one that's okay because we've just started. You can tune in next month on June 13th where we'll talk about Volume 2 - Raiser of Gales, or if that's too much, just read Volume 1 for next month and skip Volume 2 and go straight to Volume 3 for July 13th.Transient guests are we...
