And in my view, that is the most plausible answer. In the double spread title page of chapter 1, Mikoma's "ideal" (of Momiji) is flat out called a "curse." A "doctrine" of "hatred." The Momiji we see in his imagination is likely wrought from a childhood ideation he refuses to let go of -- Makita chastising him this chapter. And when Momiji's current existence as a manipulative, attention whoring, and insensitive cunt stands antipodal to his headcanon, he seethes. The flames of that hatred are slowly being stoked. This almost certainly applies to Momiji as well, but we do not have her side of the story yet. But her temperament and actions so far incline me to believe Mikoma's intuition is spot on. The Momiji leaf symbolism in the opening page, Roka's misery, Mikoma being an Ebihara parallel, etc just make too much a perfect storm for her to be anything else. The MC's great grandmother allegedly saw that fused soul (a ball of fire) as a child. This anecdote is the thesis statement for the story. But despite this, it is mostly played for parallels and psychological drama. Whether or not anything blatantly supernatural is happening with The Town™ is up for interpretation. With Sangeki, I am not expecting any actual ghosts. The ghost woman = the ball of fire. The end state of what the MC can become if not saved. At least, from my perspective. Would be surprised if Ryou played the supernatural aspect straight.
