If so, please share.
I don't think it was always like this. But both when reading and writing, I can't seem to love a character anymore. It's been like this for years. I can cry for a character, root for them, and so on, but as soon as I close the manga volume or episode I become totally apathetic and sociopathic. I sort of feel this way to real people too now. Not sure if it's depression, sociopathy or what. But maybe one factor is dopamine overdose, whether through hentai or anime and manga and so on. I always wondered if gacha players wouldn't eventually hit a "character overload" and then stop caring. Your brain has a limit to the number of "humanlike entities" you can store well after all. Dunbar's number and so on. If you keep starting new stories as the years go by, you'll have to kick out old characters or be less inviting to new ones due to a constant capacity of storage, no?

Has anyone else not been able to "love" characters recently? If so, why?

You have grown up.

For a certain narrow definition of "grown up", that is, adapting to the modern world, perhaps. I don't believe in quotes prescriptively but picrel, age ideally should not tear away your ability to like characters (and people)

Getting older, I simultaneously love characters and hate people more.

Is there any trick or knack to liking characters more that you (or other anons) could share?

A lot of waifufags don't realize they're supposed to actually love their ones as if they were living with them. I'd say your sentiment is not that uncommon.
Especially since social rejects (often those unsullied by loving 3DPD) tend to get desensitized towards rabu rabu.
In the end love is not really as simple as just a feeling, like admiration or understanding.
>I always wondered if gacha players...
I've mained one girl as my favorite and the rest were just temporary meta investments

Ignoring the ragebait, I'll say a lot of men are too wary of sex pussy cum and do not get horny enough for the girl they idealize. Mad whore complex it was called

Try compress similar characters into archetypes.

I thought I was but then I lost my father and my cat and isolated myself and started watching One Piece and something just fucking clicked in my head and since that I've been able to love fictional characters like they were my friends, and after that I've rewatched everything I ever liked and I've come to realize that many of the characters I thought I liked suck ass, and many of those I hated are great. I think it's not unlike the stories of people trying acid and suddenly they learn empathy and become entirely different people. I had to lose those I loved more than anything else go to darker places I've ever been to get to the state I was able to learn how to love a person on a conceptual level that is required to love a character, and One Piece helped me do that. Never touched shonenshit before either, which is funny.
