Sorry but reading physical animes is only good after they make the western box set that is significantly reduced in price.

I actually bought Middlemarch a while ago (along with Moby Dick, which I read) and so that would be what I'd read if I wanted to take a break from manga and if I wanted to read fiction instead of non-fiction. It's bizarre that people think it's impossible to read both manga and "real" books.

Really depends on who made the english release, which edition, how much is it, and what is the quality of the translation. Censorships too but I don't know any examples of english releases that censors.
City Hunter by Panini Manga (deluxe edition) was so worth getting. It does a good job at the translation and even keeping the onomatopoeias as is.
I do have the first editions of Glénat's Dragon Ball which looking back at it, is probably one of the worst kinds of volumes.
>>
>>288081691
Only because of the deliberately nerfed resolution digital version sometimes get.
2-page spreads are obviously better in digital and overall the experience is smoother.
The only advantage to physical is for people like me who are just conditioned to enjoy holding the paper, objectively there is no real advantage aside from display purposes.

It really is... Until you realize you easily spent 150$+ for only 1 series, which didn't even took that long to read. They both have their appeal and that's ok, i think using both is pretty symbiotic.

Am I broke? Do I wanna discover manga to see if I'll even like it? Do I just wanna read shit asap to know what'll happen? Do I want the most convenient option? Digital it is.
Do I want to hold something that actually feels good to read? Do I want to physically own it? Do I just like collecting stuff? Physical then.

Personally i use digital to discover most stuff and when I've got a manga that becomes a favorite or I'm confident I'll love, i go get it at the store. Then when it's a sunny day i take a walk and read it at the park or something, it's pretty pleasant ngl.

Dumas and Dostoyevskis were the Odas and Fujimotos of their own times. Hell, Dumas were paid by the line of text so that's why he did as much dialogue as possible.

Even Homer was mainstream shit for normalfags when the only available genre was telling stories by the fire.

Physical is comfy. Takes too much space to buy every single thing I ever read. But I'll pick up physical copies of stuff I intend to re-read every few years.

And hunting for out-of-print volumes is kinda fun. Going on a road trip to look for WataOshi #5 and actually finding it for $9 was my best day of 2025.

I never got the READ A BOOK thing. I've read multiple and honestly, I'd say watership down was a better book than Monte Cristo. Not to say that Monte Cristo was bad but it was definitely mary sueish as hell. Dantes just becomes a swave guy who's always 20 steps ahead of everyone and just sweeps his competition. The biggest hype I got from the book is when Mercedes finally confronts him but it doesn't really matter since he stays with his exotic !notslave and then leaves everyone behind after fucking up like 80% of the cast. It's still good to see how Dantes ruins all the people who betray him but it's like 80% fluff (I'd honestly recommend the abridged version purely because Dumas back then HAD to fluff it up since publishing these novels were like weekly manga style stuff so a lot of fucking filler).

Another thing is if you think some manga/anime is retarded, you haven't seen nothing yet.
>read a book where well psychic ghost lady is ACTUALLY A COMPUTER VIRUS AND MC has to kill himself and go into the virtual world to cure CANCER (this is also a very famous book/movie)
>read another book where teacher gives her students aids by poisoning their milk because the students killed her daughter
>literally all of fucking haruki murakami. every single one. all of his books has some sort of retarded nonsense.
>most of ryo murakami which is edgelord supreme
>Keigo Higashino's books are okay but sometimes (actually a lot of japanese authors do this even in manga) where he'll go way off tangent explaining a character's interest and now you have a whole chapter of random math that has no relevance to the plot.

That being said, always open to recs. I tackled Book of the New Sun and got pretty filtered. I got the "gist" of the story but I don't really get why it's so good. It's just an asshat who becomes God eventually or something. Maybe it's the prose but I can't get the imagery well in this book nor do I really like or hate Severian. I try to read up or listen to discussion online to try to see if I'm missing something but it's just them talking about yada yada yada Severian is sexist severian is an asshole severian lies blah blah blah. jesus I hate when most media discussion ends up like this.

Exactly. I don't know why people became so elitist over books. The average book is complete fucking drivel. When novellas were first invented, they were considered low-class entertainment that would bring about the death of civilization. Time is the only thing that's changed. In 100 years people will be saying "lol look at this uncultured swine watching holograms! Why don't you grow up and play a video game or read some manga like an adult?" while sipping wine by the fireplace in their wingback chairs.

Yeah it's crazy how some people just ignore actual prices for thing. My sister in law got me Me and the Devil Blues for Christmas a couple years ago from some local place that sold them like dirt cheap. Both volumes are pretty rare now

Paper degrades so enjoy reading mold in 10 years, meanwhile digital remains brand new forever.
That is of course if you store it properly. Data stored in a spinning medium like CDs or HDDs will suffer from bit degradation of about 10dB/year due to rotational velocidensity. If you truly want your digital manga to last forever you need to store it in a zip file in an SSD.

Just finished reading The Picture of Dorian Gray. Personally, I preferred Cossette no Shouzo (the anime adaptation) but both are good.

My copy of Count of Monte Cristo is in the closet with some of my less impressive mangas

I didn't know fire force volumes were that thick

Those are omnibus volumes. Typically volumes that thick are US only, though occasionally you get Japanese releases that are similar. Mostly for older series. I haven't seen anything with a quick search about Fire Force having a Japanese release like that.
