Did you actually watching any VHS anime in the 90s and early 2000s? Any guys who started in the 80s here? I think I might have watched part of NGE in the 90s. That would have been in 1997 or so. I remember the cross explosion. But I definitely did watch anime on vhs then, even finished all of DBZ and GT years before toonami aired it in 1999.

I was in my mom's womb in early 2000s, but I have a few memories of watching some children anime from the 70s which she found in an old collection of vhs.

My introduction to anime was watching Akira, GitS and Angel Cop on VHS at a cousins home when we visited them in England. This was 98 or 99. I had been obsessing over the Wambdue project GitS music video was was blown away when I realized it was based on a full movie. My cousin was into Shirows original work too, let me read that and other adult stuff like Hellblazer. Very stimulating for me at the time. He also got me into Warhammer years prior, just before it got popular in Sweden,
I was totally unaware of anime but once we got home I started searching for it like crazy. Turns out we had a fairly decent VHS trading scene in my home town, but mostly for the few Swedish dubs of anime for younger children, like Moomin (produced for Scandinavia), Kimba, Sailor Moon etc. A few outliers got very popular though like Ninja Scroll and Blood: The last Vampire.
A few years later everyone got ADSL which really blew the world open. DC++ was the best.
The first TV show I really got attached to was Rurouni Kenshin.

Not talking about recordings but actual going out of your way to rent
>>

>actual going out of your way to rent
no point in doing that when anime aired on TV all the time
>>
I was sorta force to, in my country when DBZ ended GT only got VHS releases for a while and it was way later that it started airing on tv.

I've never watched anime on VHS, I'm not that old. I'm in my mid 30s and it was old tech and DVD became common early on my life. Also I got into it properly somewhat late. I've seen saint seiya or dragon ball or sailor moon on or maybe stuff like moomins or maya depending of you count those as anime but I didn't recognize either former or latter as a distinct "anime" medium at that point. I only got into anime specifically only in 00s after I got Internet and I was streaming it from those early piracy sites. I don't think I ever had anime on any sort of physical media.

I've still got my VHS of the UK dub of Catgirl Nukunuku with the scouse actors

>"Ewww Kneeew it sank miss a-keee-ko"

This trailer is pretty iconic to anyone who grew up with anime on vhs in the UK : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xM_-q_KyCig

I started this topic and I am 33. It's not that you're old. You were just introduced to anime late I think

yes my neighbors brother was an archetypal basement nerd and once threatened to beat my father up with a bō using bōjutsu.
he had a decent collection of 80s ovas and the old pre disney ghibli dubs

That's true, but I also don't really remember watching "normal" cartoons or movies on VHS much. I remember we had a VCR but it broke at some point and we sort of skipped that tech level. I remember watching stuff on DVD in my tweens with my sister much more vividly. I suppose I just didn't watch that much stuff in general at the time.

I had some of those VHS tapes of Pokemon in the late 90s. I remember there being an ad for some anime movie where the premise was some girl getting kidnapped and forced to marry some guy over a mistake while some song in Japanese played in the background. Decades later, I did some digging and found it out it was the first Ranma movie. I'm currently collecting the manga, the stupid humor is up my alley.

>Any guys who started in the 80s here?

I think most people born in this era probably watched anime on VHS without even realizing it was anime
>>
>>288088885
I watched Vampire Hunter D, Dragon Ball, Macross II, Macross Plus, Record of Lodoss War, and a few others on DVD. If you want to count Robotech, then I watched that on DVD as well
>>
>>288093802
its not on myanimelist lmao
>>
>>288093802
>Transformers is totally anime dudes
Why are you like this
>>
>>288088885
Yeah, got into it in the early 90s because my uncle was an ahead of the times weeb digging up weird shit.
Also have fond memories of stuff like Tank Police airing on late night slots and bio booster guyver being on.
Really wish I could remember some of the more obscure shit I'd seen back then because every now and then I'll vaguely remember scenes, try to track them down and come up either blank or with something similar but not it.
Also vague memories of Urotsukidoji and Adventure Kid airing and watching it with some friends. Different times.

>>288092817
That takes me back.
