It's been that way for a while with like Initial D, but it feels there's just no real passion for mechanical animation like you would see in something like Gunsmith Cats or Area 88 anymore.

All animation worldwide stagnated about 20 years ago when the last generation of animators who knew traditional animation techniques began to retire and were replaced by subsequent generations who can only use Wacom tablets.

Not to mention the start of WMT proper, the Leijiverse, Space Battleship Yamato and its first reairing/reboot, Time Bokan, the emergence of Real Robot anime, the dawn of racing anime (apart from Mach GoGoGo, which is an outlier), etc. The 1990s can only really claim LN adaptations, isekai, and I guess mystery anime.
