Some save the fantasy world plot for a couple of episodes in the beginning, a couple in the middle, and a couple in the end. Everything in between is standalone episodic filler.
>Characters I should look forward to?
Xellos. Iirc he's introduced in the second season but he's the best character. From the main characters, Lina is a cunt so look forward to Amelia and Sylphiel.
