it's genuinely unfortunate that such a bad anime has this op

there is not a single one-cour original that doesn't have major compromises in pacing or make some weird plot decision that they didn't workshop with people outside of production staff before they released it, and Haibane Renmei is only perfect because it takes a movie's worth of material and stretches it out to be slow as balls

I saw this blind recently knowing nothing about it and thought it was a VN adaptation. I was surprised to learn afterward that it was an original anime. The story does some things well and occasionally shows real sincerity, but there are some bits that feel like they're being edgy and the MC sometimes dips into feeling like he was written for chuunis (but is thankfully yanked out of that). Overall, the story personally feels too short. In the first major example, the part of the story where they try to find other teenagers with powers needed to be longer to emphasize bonds, though at least the MC's best chemistry was with the main girl in that regard. More probably could have been done to build up to the danger facing his sister as well. Finally, the new goal by the MC which starts at the end of the penultimate episode could have been an entire cour on its own. I know that the series' namesake meteorite probably only is visible from certain parts of the Earth each time it gets close enough, and there were only like 2-3 years to work with at most since the powers disappear with adulthood, but man did that feel way too quick.

Overall, Charlotte is worth watching at least once, even if it's got quite a few flaws. Also, that MC totally looks like Lelouche. I imagine threads at the time ragged on that.

It has a good ED too, and the lyrics fit the show pretty well.

I feel that the time travel power needed to be explored more before it was taken off the table. Even just the temptation to use it more, be it by Yuu or Shunsuke wanting to basically continue using the power through his brother, would have fleshed out the power's place in the story. Also, considering how Yuu gets the power, I feel the story needed to address what actually happens in full to anyone he ever used his initial power on. If hijacking control of a person for even a brief moment eventually steals their power entirely, what happens to the rest of them? What happens to a person without a power to steal? If Yuu is at risk of losing his sense of self from stealing so many powers, does that mean he's taking parts of the actual people away? Do they start ending up like Nao's brother as they lose their own sense of self? Do they die? This was extremely important to address and could have made for a compelling risk to any future use of Yuu's power. Yuu might have to take a gamble on what the full breadth of his power is in situations where he genuinely doesn't have enough time to wait and see all that occurs. If that wasn't ever going to be a major element of the story, the writers could have at least had Shunsuke mention he previously took a risk in one cycle by getting close to the point he'd lose his powers so he could monitor what the long-term effects of Yuu's power on someone are.

shit, forgettable fotm

Typical Maeda curse of interesting concept but way too few episodes to fit it all. Also deciding to become a completely different anime in the last episode was certainly a choice.

>Another dull looking dark haired MC that looks like every single other dull looking dark haired MC

Look I don't want to be the one to keep perpetuating the ARR ROOK SAME stereotype but you're not helping me here, show.

A masterpiece limited by technical difficulties

Very good OST (which IIRC was barely used in the anime)

At the time of it's airing I didn't think too much of it and the story definetly got rushed by the end, but today I feel that Charlotte reflected alot of the zeitgeist coming from the optimism and individualism of the early 2010s to the transitionary year of 2015, and perhaps a glimpse into the near future that we were expecting rather than what we got.

It's a comfy return to that time of 2015 now, when it still felt like a long summer, with the bright blue sky and bloom of the city...

I'm open to explanations how Odd Taxi belongs in the same breath as the other two, but Lain is the archetypical anime that just tosses around random plot points that will never pay off because they sounded cool and there was runtime to kill, and Utena wasn't single-cour but could have been with all the episodic repeated footage and random skits that add nothing to the story
>>
>>288111875
First episode seemed promising but jesus christ on a bicycle, it got more and more retarded as the series went on. It also couldn't seem to decide what genre it wanted to be.
>>
>>288111875
Way better than Angel Beats at least, now THAT was ass

First Half = Great
Second Half = Not Great

Something the series was surprisingly subtle about was how the frontwoman for ZHIEND probably had the same powers as Shunsuke. The moment never got hammered in with a major flashback or anything IIRC.
>>
>>288111875
I legitimately think Charlotte Episode 7 is one of the greatest anime episodes of all time
No idea what they were thinking for episodes 8-13 though. It's like they overdosed on trying to make it too kino

I feel that Episode 8 still flowed well enough with what Episode 7 had and maintained the impact on Yuu's life. It was still a character-driven episode, which played to the series' strengths.

Pretty much solidified how much of a hack Jun Maeda was.

Something felt amiss a bit after I posted this, so I went back to check: The MC was GLOBE-TROTTING instead of just being localized to Asia or something. One would think it'd take him years to do that, or at least long enough that he'd have to start changing up his appearance around the time people invented a name for him. The story never said Yuu unlocked some teleportation spell either, nor did they show that. They crammed way too much into that final episode, Yuu wasn't just traversing Asia, he was all over Earth and back before seemingly one school year was done.
>>
>>288119748
I friggin' called it a spell instead of a power. Whatever, leaving the post up. At least the final episode had a good moment during Yuu's globe-trotting where his character growth and healthy bonds wrangled and vanquished the last manifestation of him being a chuuni douchebag. The series did a good job of showcasing how Yuu would have been an insufferable cunt without the other people in his life showing up and taking action when they did.

Why did take away the powers of the guy helping the village again? And what will happen to it?
>>
>>288125122
Wasn't it a little girl in like a 20-second scene in the middle of the final episode? The idea Yuu had was that anyone with powers will get tracked down and abducted by corrupt governments, so if he takes all of the powers it'll be as hard as possible for corrupt governments to get any powers, in part because Shunsuke's organizations can hopefully keep him hidden afterward. Worst-case scenario is that he either can best fight off the govts or sudoku himself to get rid of the powers in one go.

I watched it as it was airing and I thought it was pretty good. But yeah, the latter part was rushed. Nao was really cute.

Btw it seems like Maeda might have been inspired by a certain VN for the ending.

Terrible. Probably even worse than Angel Beats.

I remember the hopium for Jun when this anime was announced.
>he learned his lesson when making AB
>the cast is now small so he could focus on the characters and the pacing will not be as fast as AB

I was also included into believing that.
>>
>>288130096
it does focus on characters more and it is better paced than AB tho
