Finally got around to reading and finishing this, loved it.
Even though all the characters are very chuuni I still feel like everybody is written in such a realistic way, it just felt so fresh and I don't think I've read much other manga that handles such a ridiculous situation+character so professionally and with so much love.

I was told the mangaka in general just has really amazing mana, someone mentioned Spirit Circle as one to check out, any other specific notable ones or should I just pick and choose?

Spirit Circle is his best work, you definitely should read it if you like HnS. Sengoku Youko is also worth reading.

Thanks anon, will put that one directly on the list.

Also forgot to say in the OP, and this is obviously the coldest take ever, but fuck I just loved the art here. So stylized but it still manages to just be gorgeous to look at and everybody is so expressive. This manga used to be really popular here, no? Kind of a shame it seems like it's sort of been abandoned by time, it's not like it became my favorite manga ever but I do genuinely think it's one of the best MADE manga I've read in a lot of ways.

Definitely one of the best features, you can see how the characters start out broken in some way and then progressively get over their issues.

Oh, you will love Spirit Circle then. It is just so... well thought out as a whole. The characters are a bit less expressive than the Biscuit Hammer's cast, but the overall structure of the story more than makes up for it.

Man, spirit circle, samidare and Sengoku youko storytime was so fucking fun

I think it's really interesting how it's all handled. You see a lot of people rage at the "salaryman" ending type stuff that comes out (not trying to make a statement on that kind of ending) and obviously that's not what happens here, but ultimately, it is still an ending where the message is "grow up, and become a better person" but it just goes about it way better than anything else I've seen.

Yeah, BH is a story about outcasts being forced to socialize with their peers due to unusual circumstances and coming out... as functional members of society, the rival guy somewhat exempted, we need that one comic relief till the end. I think it works better than most such cases because it is presented as them having gone through personal growth, rather than achieving some preconceived ideal.

Yeah the art is great. You can tell he might not be technically THAT good but the style reeks of soul and as a mangaka he's VERY good, he knows how to panel these things and use the visual medium to its best.

I really really like Samidare. By the way, did you notice that Swordfish knight actually was the reincarnation of Animus?

Anyway, the next steps if you like Mizukami are Spirit Circle (great and short manga, about as good as Samidare for me, although I prefer Samidare) and Sengoku Youko, which I think is the best Mizukami manga.

A lot of manga seem to idolize youth or at least shelve the adults but Mizukami manga basically scream "adults are awesome and you should become one".

At its core it's really a story about pulling a dude out of his depression by making him jog on a daily basis, drink booze with friends (and kids?), watch magical girl pantyshots on TV and pick up a hole digging hobby

I guess that's a really good point. The entire manga kind of has a running theme about just accepting somebody's ideas, even if they're stupid or harmful, and trying to actively show them what's "right". Nobody ever completely beats Amamiya over the head telling him to stop being an autist who hates the world and appreciate the things around him, they just "force" him to live a life where he IS enjoying what's going on around him and he naturally comes to the conclusion on his own.

Actually I do appreciate the confirmation, I had a strong suspicion based on the things he was saying but I wasn't totally sure since it could have just been a red herring or anything.

I didn't like it much; it felt too vanilla. I prefer Spirit Circle.

I tried reading it ages ago and kept thinking all the time "when is the story finally gonna start?" Eventually I just gave up.

I'm about due for a reread
You should go back to Biscuit Hammer every 4-5 years, when you're at different points in your life
>>
All the characters are likeable but I never really cared about the villain personally.
