It's been years years since any piece of media brought me to tears, but the final episode of this show did it for me. I really think this is one of the greatest pieces of art humanity has produced in a very long time.
Stories pertaining to themes of hope, family and resolve always get me, and this show all of that.
and if you're wondering what scene made me cry, it was the part where they were waking up from the dream induced by the anti spiral

There's a reason it's so well-loved here. It hits a lot of emotional notes and even avoids fumbling the ending. If you were to describe the events of the last few episodes it would sound silly, but watching it, you're completely on-board with the absurdity. It is Imaishi's magnum opus and Gainax's swan song.

That's whole segment was very powerful, yes.
I watched this as it was airing, I have rewatched it several times. I know what is going to happen and it still moves me to tears every time.
The ridiculous action scenes have aged wonderfully too, always fun as fuck to watch.

It was one of the defining anime of my adolescence, I watched it when it first came out and rewatched it last year. It's peak Gainax and peak anime. It's affirmative towards life, as anime should be, and it's thematically coherent from beginning to end.
If you liked it, I suggest checking out Diebuster and Gunbuster, which are probably the closest in terms of themes/aesthetic and pace. I loved both. I really miss this kind of anime.

It's beloved because people self-insert themselves as Simon and post AI art of him kissing Yoko.
