Interesting premise but the misery porn is overdone and they made Nyu too retarded. I think a lot of its popularity in the west back in the day was because western cartoons were so overly censored that this was somehow refreshing.

>>288134756I think the anime has such a peculiar tone making it unique even among its 2000s contemporaries.The opening is already a clear sign of deeper purpose because you don't do an entire hommage to Gustave Klimt accompanied by a sacred choir soloist for nothing. It's clear they intended to depict Elfen Lied's romance as some sort of biblical tragedy by displaying diclonius like mystical beings akin to angels more than just mutated humans. The adaptation scope of Elfen Lied is still so much fucking higher than whatever else Arms made, it's far more in line with Kite than like Queen's Blade.The thing is the original material is just terribly mediocre which made the anime mediocre as well because amnesia+lover's reunion is so fucking overdone especially where it serves mostly edgy dog killing scenes.
