However as a predator species with strong scavenger adaptations (not true omnivores) we currently must eat at least some meat in order to not suffer malnutrition. At such time when lab-grown meat is chemically identical to natural we can all transition our society from mass slaughter to a more peaceful one. But for the time being, a modest amount of gratitude, respect, and prayer for the creatures that die to sustain your life is the best and most reasonable thing you can do unless you are involved in artificial meat research.

A sense of smell is often the primary way that many animals navigate and identify individuals. If some aliens that followed that pattern landed on Earth and then tested for human sentience by seeing if you recognized your own smell, how many would even pass? Could you identify your own scent? Probably not particularly well.

>>288154366It entirely depends on the type of fish. A large number rely on scent over sight. Especially any that live in areas of murky water or low light conditions. That if we figured out a version of the mirror test that used something like scent, you'd see a larger number of animals pass the tests of self-recognition. I am not disagreeing with the basic premise of the above post. Just adding onto it in my own way.
