At most you could make a case it shares some degree of similarities in aesthetics and some plot elements, like the idea of a system that exploits young girls, and even that is tackled in a different way. Other than being labelled as Magical Girls shows, comparing the two to see which is better is like comparing day and night, too different.With that said, the way the whole franchise was handled is what sent it to the gutter, which gives me the ground to say that the YuYuYu franchise was definitively handled worse than Madoka. The writing of the first season and sequel hook was pasable enough for a at least the sequel to have potential to make things even more interesting, but the direction they took was not to exploit the settling and worldbuilding to create a story that would involve our characters and engage us, but instead they focused heavily on the character drama and relationships without trying to make sense of the world or exploring interesting things of the settling, like what happened to the outside world and how, and if there is truly nothing else beyond the Sea of Fire. I think they attempted to delve into that in the "3rd season", but they fucked it with the horrible adaptation of the Nowayu and KuMeYu of within the so called The great blooming Chapter, which in order to make it to 12 episodes they had to recycle the 2nd season, which was only 6 episodes, which resolves the entire conflict with a big Deus Ex-Machina.Now, mind you, I think for a magical girl show it did a decent job, unless you watched this how because of the plot and not the cute characters doing badass things and being cute, as well the melodrama and feels they give us whenever they struggle. Is just that Madoka executes all of that better, with a more elaborate and complex writing, thus we say it was "better"

YuYuYu never had the luxury of spending time and money like that.

Togo was manipulated by Snogs into doing that. It was a convoluted work around for Togo not remembering her time with Sonoko and also the Taisha stealing her phone from her so she could do it herself. The story used in the PS Vita game was that Sonoko had wargamed the solution to Shinju's energy crisis, and found the solution-other than making peace with Amaterasu- was to lure Vertex or a large number of stardust into the Juukai and kill them there where Shinju could absorb the energy and the matter when they disintegrated. Both this plan and the reveal to the Taisha that Sonoko could enter peoples dreams and cover it up with her dream eating Baku yosei- meaning she could enter the Taisha' leaders minds- terrified them and thats why she didn't have her phone and was not allowed to contact the new Yuusha until her yosei on their own found a workaround and hijacked Yuna and Togo on their way out of the Jukai

The fan service and heavy focus on SoL in particular doomed it from ever being mainstream like Madoka and this is coming from someone who liked the show enough to visit Kanonji twice.Conversely, Madoka could still hold its own even without a budget. The writing and visuals are just that good. The story structure is much more contained too. Wide spread appeal isn't a good metric for comparing the two shows because one was never meant to have it.
