I know I'm late to the party, but how's the new Ranma 1/2 reboot? As someone who grew up watching and reading the original, is the new version worth watching? I go months at a time without watching new anime and I need to know if this is worth putting on my catch-up binge list.

Not really, og anime will mog any story that's in the new anime but we'll get new once we get past Ranma's mom so it may be cool. If you love the manga you may like it a bit more too. But best girl looks good anyway, and new merch is kind of cool

Like she literally is written as just kind of dense/incompetent and quick to resort to violence rather than think things through. Think about how when there's some wacky misunderstanding going on, Ranma's usually the one trying to actually talk things out/explain and Akane's just losing her shit and won't listen. Ranma canonically is into her so much at least partially because she's somewhat helpless compared to him and it feeds his ego to save her constantly.It's like in later stories Akane becomes more of an exaggerated caricature of herself, and once you realize that's done on purpose it's easier to find her a bit funnier. Also there are a ton of chapters where she just doesn't do much but drop exposition when Ranma's in a fight or something, and it's pretty hard to actually hate her then. She kind of reads better in the format of individual manga chapters than either anime adaptation because you just don't see quite as much of her at once.I do also find it kind of cute how forgiving she is to characters who've done shit to her like try to kill/kidnap/hit on her or whatever.
